On Being Named a Black Supremacist and a Race Traitor
Race Lessons in Black and White
This article examines the approaches, strategies, and perspectives that White adoptive parents use to teach their adopted Black children about coping with race-based discrimination and the development of a positive racial identity. Using qualitative methods and the theoretical construct of White racial framing, the authors identify and critically analyze themes in the parents' race lessons. The central aim of this article is to uncover how these …

In this article, the authors examine White parents’ endeavors toward the racial enculturation and inculcation of their transracially adopted Black children. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the authors identify and analyze themes across the specific race socialization strategies and practices White adoptive parents used to help their adopted Black children to develop a positive racial identity and learn how to effectively cope with issues of race …

The desire to be and to be known as a good White person stems from the recognition that Whiteness is problematic, recognition that many White liberals try to escape by being demonstrably different from other, racist Whites. When good White liberals exhibit certain behaviors the expectation becomes a good Wh…
The politics of race in two languages
Drawing upon critical analyses of participant observations of classrooms, school documents, and in‐depth interviews with teachers, administrators, and school‐district supervisors conducted from 1999 to 2002, this qualitative study employs a post‐structuralist framework to probe one US public elementary school’s quest to realize educational equity through dual language education. Focused on exploring the ways that students’ racial identities influ…
The Geographies of Difference
Citywide constructs such as “West Side” or “South Side” are spatial codes that result from more than the informal conversations of city residents. This article shows how elementary school educators in one U.S. metropolitan school district participated in the production of a local knowledge of the East Side and West Side space and individual. It demonstrates how educators used these codes to name race and class, as well as to obscure the codes’ me…
