  • The Past as a Stochastic Process

Open Access•David H Wolpert, Michael Holton Price et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer Applications…•2024

Historical processes manifest remarkable diversity. Nevertheless, scholars have long attempted to identify patterns and categorize historical actors and influences with some success. A stochastic process framework provides a structured approach for the analysis of large historical datasets that allows for detection of sometimes surprising patterns, identification of relevant causal actors both endogenous and exogenous to the process, and comparis…

  • Tit for tattling: Cooperation, communication, and how each could stabilize the other

Open Access•Victor Vikram Odouard, Michael Holton Price•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2023

Indirect reciprocity is a mechanism by which individuals cooperate with those who have cooperated with others. This creates a regime in which repeated interactions are not necessary to incent cooperation (as would be required for direct reciprocity). However, indirect reciprocity creates a new problem: how do agents know who has cooperated with others? To know this, agents would need to access some form of reputation information. Perhaps there is…

  • Human behavioral ecology and niche construction

Open Access•E Ready, Michael Holton Price•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2021

We examine the relationship between niche construction theory (NCT) and human behavioral ecology (HBE), two branches of evolutionary science that are important sources of theory in archeology. We distinguish between formal models of niche construction as an evolutionary process, and uses of niche construction to refer to a kind of human behavior. Formal models from NCT examine how environmental modification can change the selection pressures that…

  • End-to-end Bayesian analysis for summarizing sets of radiocarbon dates

    Open Access•Michael Holton Price, J M Capriles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 12

Archaeologists and demographers increasingly employ aggregations of published radiocarbon (14C) dates as demographic proxies summarizing changes in human activity in past societies. Presently, summed probability densities (SPDs) of calibrated radiocarbon dates are the dominant method of using 14C dates to reconstruct demographic trends. Unfortunately, SPDs are incapable of converging on the distribution that generated a set of radiocarbon measure…

  • From peaks to ports: Insights into tin provenance, production, and distribution from adapted applications of lead isotopic analysis of the Uluburun tin ingots

    Open Access•Wayne Powell, Michael L Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2021•Cited by: 17•References: 7

  • Urban Science: Integrated Theory from the First Cities to Sustainable Metropolises

Open Access•José Lobo, Marina Alberti et al.•ARTICLE•SSRN Electronic Journal•2020

  • Provenance of tin in the Late Bronze Age Balkans based on probabilistic and spatial analysis of Sn isotopes

Open Access•Andrea Mason, Wayne Powell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 4

  • Fitness-Maximizers Employ Pessimistic Probability Weighting for Decisions Under Risk

    Open Access•Michael Holton Price, J H Jones•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 7

The standard theory of rationality posits that agents order preferences according to average utilities associated with different choices. Expected utility theory has repeatedly failed as a predictive theory, as reflected in a growing literature in behavioural economics. Evolutionary theorists have suggested that seemingly irrational behaviours in contemporary contexts may have once served important functions, but existing work linking fitness and…

  • The effect of leprotic infection on the risk of death in medieval rural Denmark

Open Access•Saige Kelmeli, Michael Holton Price et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 36

INTRODUCTION: Paleopathological studies of leprosy in Danish skeletal collections show that many individuals suffered from this stigmatized disease during the Middle Ages. This study examines the risk of death associated with leprotic infection in individuals from the Danish rural cemetery of Øm Kloster (AD 1172-1536). Specifically, we modeled the influence of leprotic infection on age-specific mortality accounting also for sex and social status …
