Early modern lighting of a main European Sea route
The sea route between Denmark and Sweden to the Baltic Sea was provided with lighthouses as early as the 1560s, and much later two lighthouses at the southern tip of Norway were added. Like other Norwegian lighthouses these were built and operated by private individuals with privileges giving them the right to levy duties on shipping. Aardal Copperworks in western Norway was a small royally owned copperworks that operated at an enormous loss during the first decades of the eighteenth century. Tangaskebrenning – en miljøtrussel for over to hundre år siden
I annen halvdel av 1700-tallet ble brenning av tang og tare for å produsere aske en næringsvirksomhet i kystområdene fra Ryfylke til Trøndelag. Throughout most of Europe news, which rose sharply in volume, now traveled expeditiously. The comparative ease by which word could be sent helped new social and economic relationships flourish, intensifying the process of state-building. The consequences of this transformation for both postal workers and consumers alik…
Late Galleys
From the early 18th century the Mediterranean galley experienced a new golden age in the Baltic Sea, as it was well adapted to the shallow sea with the islands and skerries found there. In Norway the Fredriksvern naval shipyard was founded in 1750 to build a galley fleet. For various reasons progress was slow, and when the galley fleet finally was built in the 1760s, it was probably the last one in Europe. New and more efficient inshore vessels w…
