  • Application of Multi‐Method Dating for Understanding the Gravettian North of Moravia, Central Europe

    Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, P Bujalska et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•Referencias: 39

This article presents the results of integrating three methods to assess the age of the Upper Palaeolithic site of Pietraszyn 11 (SW Poland), close to the Moravian Gate. Sediment chronology determined using optically stimulated luminescence produced promising, yet ambiguous results (51.0 ± 3.7 to 20.3 ± 0.7 ka). Molecular dating of rodent remains provided a more exact date (32–22.5 ka cal bp ). Radiocarbon dating, however, allowed us to narrow th…

  • Upper Palaeolithic Occupations in The Middle Dnister Valley

    Open Access•Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, L Demay et al.•ARTICLE•Arheologia•2024

In 2019, new excavations were carried out at Doroshivtsi III site, dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. Ten identifiable archaeological levels belong to the Gravettian technocomplex. In the article, detailed data about the faunal remains is presented. The remains of reindeer, horses, mammoths, a wolf, a vulpine, and also a crow have been identified. According to the data, the main species for hunting were reindeer, then horses. In comparison with t…

  • Late Middle Palaeolithic and Early Upper Palaeolithic in Poland in the light of new numerical dating

Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, Dariusz Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Geographia Polonica•2024

Although the first numerical dating of Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites in Poland was applied at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century, it has only been in the last two decades that a data increase has been recorded, making it possible to discuss both the development of human behaviour and cultural phenomena in time perspective. This paper aims to show the chronological diversity of sites dating from the beginning of the Weichse…

  • Eastern periphery of the Magdalenian world. Wierzawice 31 hunting campsite (SE Poland)

Open Access•Dariusz Bobak, Maria Łanczont et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2022

Wierzawice 31 site is one of the easternmost Magdalenian sites, situated in the south-eastern corner of the Kolbuszowa Plateau surrounded, to the east, by the broad San River valley and, on the south, by the sub-Carpathian ice-marginal valley. This archaeological site lies in an area with surface deposits developed as periglacial stratified silty-sandy sediments about 10 m thick, adjoined in the NW by an isolated patch of loess of the island type…

  • The Late Magdalenian in Poland — New Data, New Issues

    Open Access•Marta Połtowicz-Bobak, Dariusz Bobak•ARTICLE•Archaeology and Early History of…•2022

New research on the settlement of the Magdalenian culture in the Polish lands has made it possible to discover new sites. These new sites come mainly from two regions: Sandomierska Upland, at the confluence of the two rivers Vistula and San, and in south-eastern Poland. In the latter region, the sites are associated with the valley of the San and its tributary, the Wisłok. The two regions are linked by a network of raw material links and also by …

  • Old site, new problems

New research at the Doroshivtsi site in Ukraine has provided data that allow fresh insights into a well-known and important Gravettian site in the Middle Dniester Valley

  • On the edge of eastern and western culture zones in the early Late Pleistocene. Święte 9 – A new epigravettian site in the south-east of Poland

    Open Access•Maria Łanczont, Marta Połtowicz-Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

  • The Dawn of the Mesolithic on the Plains of Poland

Open Access•Tomasz Płonka, Dariusz Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Prehistory•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 14

In this article we take a fresh look at the population dynamics of the Polish Plain in the transition from the Pleistocene to the Holocene, using Bayesian analysis and modelling of radiocarbon dates, and contrast the results with data from the North German Plain. We argue against simple adaptationalist models and instead see the cultural landscape as a complex patchwork of old forms and the emerging new traits of the early Mesolithic. We argue th…

  • Variability of the Lithic Raw Material in the Upper and Late Palaeolithic sites in Southeastern Poland

    Open Access•Dariusz Bobak, Marta Połtowicz-Bobak•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Polona•2018

In terms of supply of good quality raw materials for stone tool manufacture, the area of southeastern Poland is rather poor. Considering research conducted so far, there are only few sites that can be the basis for analysis. Nevertheless, certain phenomena seem to be characteristic on sites in southeastern Poland in the later phase of the Upper Palaeolithic and in the Late Palaeolithic. There are usually more than one kind of raw material present…

  • Regiony osadnicze na terenach polski w młodszej fazie górnego i początkach schyłkowego paleolitu na tle osadnictwa środkowoeuropejskiego

Dariusz Bobak, Marta Połtowicz-Bobak•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Nicolai…•2017

Uniwersytet Rzeszowski Polska Instytut Archeologii, Dariusz Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Materiały i Sprawozdania…•2016

This article attempts to clarify the Szeletian chronology of the site Lubotyń 11 on the Głubczyce Plateau. The site, maintained in a good condition, has a series of radiocarbon and OSL dating. By the use of the method of Bayesian modelling, a model has been constructed, taking into account the stratigraphic relationships between the natural and cultural events observed at the site. It allowed us to restore the history of the site and, in particul…

Rzeszów Polska Instytut Archeologii UR, Dariusz Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Materiały i Sprawozdania…•2015

Regarding the areas of south-eastern Poland, there are not numerous Sviderian sites, of which only a small part has been excavated. One of them has provided flint materials that was discovered during the research of a multicultural sites complex in Łąka (No. 11–16), Trzebownisko com., Rzeszów dist. Poor inventory of the Sviderian culture has only been identified in 114 artefacts, whereas the majority of remains have been found in the cluster. Cha…
