Exploitation of Energy Resources in Africa and the Consequences for Minority Rights
Recent case studies from the Western Sahara, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Angola, reveal the increasing militarization of the development of oil and gas reserves in Africa. This is generating social tension and, in particular, exacerbating the repression of minority groups. Private security forces and African standing armies are being used to secure the interests of American, Asian and European companies as they seek to extend their control over natural…

Human Stability and Conflict in the Horn of Africa

When the rule of law is maintained at the expense of diversity, catastrophic conflict may arise. Regi…
Environmental Entitlements and the Rural Poor in South Africa
While high expectations regarding the alleviation of poverty accompanied the advent of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994, little progress has been made. This article details the dynamics of what is commonly termed the "poverty-environment relationship" in South Africa and focuses the reader's attention on the continued existence and effects of this phenomenon. The analysis points the way to various new approaches to fighting …
Human Stability and Conflict in the Horn of Africa
Human stability is rare in the Horn of Africa. The history of the countries of the Horn since the end of colonialism in the region has largely been one of violent repression and insurgency. Succession by peaceful election has been the exception. This paper looks at the internal conflicts in the Horn of Africa in terms of the balance of power between civil society and the state in the countries comprising the Horn. A relevant feature is the format…
State Disintegration and Human Rights in Africa
This article discusses external and internal disintegrative pressures at work on contemporary African states and examines the consequences of the failure of ideologies of nationalism and nation-statism for human rights. In particular, this paper examines the causes of state disintegration in Liberia and Somalia, suggesting that the effect is to exacerbate the already vulnerable position of marginalized groups
