The goal of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions and experience of social anxiety, as well as attitudes toward help‐seeking and school‐based mental health services, in Black American adolescents. Focus groups and individual interviews were conduct…

  • HIV-related ‘conspiracy beliefs’

Jessica Jaiswal, Stuart N Singer et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2019

HIV-related 'conspiracy beliefs' include ideas about the genocidal origin of HIV and the nature and purpose of HIV-related medications. These ideas have been widely documented as affecting myriad health behaviours and outcomes, including birth control use and HIV testing. Most HIV-related research has quantitatively explored this phenomenon, and further qualitative research is necessary to better understand the complexity of these beliefs as arti…

Despite the high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among injection drug users also infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and the synergistic adverse effect of the two diseases on patients' health and survival, research on the clinical management of these patients and particularly the low uptake of HCV therapy is limited. We conducted qualitative interviews with 17 HIV providers from two urban public hospitals. We discove…

  • Felt and Enacted Stigma Among HIV/HCV-Coinfected Adults

    Open Access•Helen-Maria Lekas, Karolynn Siegel et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2011•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 26

The realization that many persons with HIV/AIDS are subjected to multiple layers of stigmatization because they belong to socially deviant and disenfranchised groups (e.g., injection drug users, racial/ethnic and sexual minorities) accounts for an increasing interest in the phenomenon of stigma layering. The stigma associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) has also been conceptualized as layered. However, researchers have overlooked the fact that H…

In the post-1996 era, the effectiveness of antiviral therapies (such as highly active antiretroviral therapy [HAART]), which transformed HIV/AIDS into a more manageable disease, raised expectations that the disease's stigma would decrease. The authors compared focused-interview data from a pre-HAART (1994 to 1996) and a HAART-era (2000 to 2003) sample of African American, Puerto Rican, and White women living with HIV/AIDS to identify changes in s…

  • Pathways to HIV testing among adults aged fifty and older with HIV/Aids

    Helen-Maria Lekas, Eric W Schrimshaw et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2005

Older adults (age 50 +) are less likely to be tested for HIV and are diagnosed at a later disease stage than younger individuals. To examine the barriers and facilitating factors to testing in this age group, interview data from 35 older men and women who tested HIV positive at age 50 or older were analysed. Participants described a variety of pathways to testing, related to gender, sexual orientation, drug use, and era of the epidemic. Older gay…
