Polycentricity, Commuting Pattern, Urban Form
This article investigates the dynamics of commuting patterns using the 2005 American Community Survey for Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties in Southern California. Using various analytical approaches, the article illustrates that spatial/temporal patterns of employment should be utilized to develop a better understanding of the spatial dynamics of commuting patterns. The results suggest that (1) counter to popular belief, not all residents…
Migration and the Persian Gulf
In 2005, the nations of the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC), which consist of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, housed over 12 million international migrants. Employed mainly within the service and construction industries, these foreign workers have become a demographic majority in some GCC countries, creating an urgent need for more progressive immigration and equitable integration policies. This article pro…

Neighborhood Integration
This study focuses on two methodological aspects of neighborhood integration measurement: temporal variations and choice of demographic units. In the first case, I use a unified census tract database from 1940 to 1990 to examine the changing patterns of integration in Los Angeles County. In this section, I illustrate that use of the Entropy Index for integration classification may produce results that are in tune with the historical demography of…

Flexible Retailing
In the last 15 years a range of new and revitalised forms of retailing have emerged in cities and suburbs across the USA. Power centres, hybrid centres, speciality retail centres, and street‐based retailing have complicated the existing mix of shopping centres, malls, factory outlet/off‐price centres, and festive/restoration centres. After examining the literature on retail change and establishing our theoretical framework, we analyse the history…
Creating a Toxic Neighborhood in Los Angeles County
The city of Commerce, a largely industrial and Latino city east of Los Angeles, contains a disproportionately high concentration of manufacturers that emit toxic chemicals. The coincidence of a minority population and toxic sites is a classic example of environmental inequity. The authors seek to understand why industry located in this community. A historical investigation of the development of a hazardous community suggests that demographics alo…

Settlement Patterns of Iranians in the United States
In 1990, The U.S. Census Reported that 226,123 Iranian immigrants were living in the U.S., a growth of slightly under 100,000 in a tenyear period. These were individuals who either were born in Iran, or were of Iranian ancestry but born outside Iran in a country other than the U.S. The almost doubling of this population over a short period of time, combined with the group's variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, has created some of the most divers…
Ethnic Community Development
In terms of spatial distribution, ethnic community development is affected by the ethnic group's unique socioeconomic and ethnic charateristics, as well as the urban structure within which it forms. The different, but important, role each of these variables plays cannot be documented easily. Therefore, studies on the internal and external diversity of ethnic communities face serious limitations. The study reported here illustrates the difficulty …
