    Open Access•Francisco J Romero Salvadó•ARTICLE•War in History•2017

At the outbreak of the armed hostilities in Europe, the Spanish government rapidly decreed its official neutrality in the conflict. This article analyses the nature and meaning of that neutrality and the reasons for its maintenance until the bitter end. Its adoption was a logical and necessary decision given the country’s economic and military weakness and the absence of any formal treaties with the belligerent blocs. However, this article examin…

    Open Access•Francisco J Romero Salvadó•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Drawing upon a vast array of primary sources, this article focuses on a key period of modern Spanish history: November 1918 – April 1919. In the aftermath of the First World War and spurred on by the Allied victory, demands by Catalonia's political elites for greater autonomy seized the country's agenda. However, the political tussle between the centre and the Catalan elites ended a few months later with their mutual defeat. The upsurge of labour…

Soviet contempt towards national peculiarities and the Bolsheviks’ dogmatism undermined rather than aided the expansion of Communism. Of course, many Communist parties in Western Europe became powerful, both in state politics and within the organized labour movement, but there were some glaring exceptions. This article reveals how, paradoxically (given the country’s initial massive enthusiasm for Bolshevism), the Spanish Communist Party was, ab i…

  • The Great War and the Crisis of Liberalism in Spain, 1916–1917

    Open Access•Francisco J Romero Salvadó•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2003

Based largely on primary sources, this article concentrates on the Liberal administration led by Count Romanones between December 1915 and April 1917. This is regarded as a crucial moment in the country's transition from elite to mass politics. The social and economic impact of the First World war brought about massive economic dislocation and social distress that in turn generated unprecedented levels of popular mobilization against the regime. …
