Navigating the rapids of today’s research expectations
This collective writing was catalysed by a request from our Faculty Research Office for the School of Education to provide a list of journals that publish ‘quality research’ in education. Tasked with compiling this list, the first author invited all academic staff to name up to three journal titles that they considered fitted this description. Hegemonic masculinities and sexual abuse
This article discusses male experiences of hegemonic masculinity and abuse within two small, anonymized new religious movements, drawing on primary source material from the educational charity Inform. Both groups created patriarchal, misogynistic cultures in which women were inferior to men and the leaders used teachings to justify restricted gender roles, sexual activity and sexual abuse of women. Ideas in the Space Between
Research on the creative process has focused on how an idea develops within a single focal creative project. But creators often work to develop creative portfolios featuring multiple projects that overlap and intertwine over time. Dramatically increased population flows since at least the 1980s, primarily through economic migration and refugee resettlement, have brought considerable ethnic and linguistic diversity to classrooms around the world. What teachers say about addressing culture in their EFL teaching practices
This paper examines Vietnamese EFL teachers’ beliefs about the role of culture in language teaching. It also considers how they address culture in their teaching practices in a Vietnamese university. Ethnographic data collected from semi-structured interviews indicated that opportunities for culture to find its way into EFL classroom activities were still limited. Priority was given to teaching language knowledge and skills, while culture played …
Group Roles
Roles help group members understand what behavior a group expects from them and how they can contribute to the group. We review alternative ways of conceptualizing roles and suggest ways that can both benefit and challenge groups.
Group Cohesiveness
Group cohesiveness represents the extent to which group members are motivated to stay in the group. Some degree of group cohesiveness is relatively straightforward to establish and benefits group performance. At high levels of cohesiveness, however, group performance can be badly affected. We review the meaning of cohesiveness and its role in group life.
Group Norms
Norms provide group members with invaluable information about how to behave during social interactions with one another. The precise effect of those norms on individuals and groups, however, depends on their content. We review how norms develop and some alternative ways that may have an impact on group life.
Group Dynamics
We briefly review the study of group dynamics and suggest how future research may examine group topics in more dynamic ways.
