  • Council‐Based Approaches to Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence for Distal Change in the System Response

    Open Access•Nicole E Allen, Nathan R Todd et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 22

Communities across the United States are collaborating to create a coordinated response to intimate partner violence (IPV); ideally, this involves promoting best practices in the justice and human service systems and engaging a broad array of community sectors (e.g., human service; criminal justice; faith; business; education) to promote victim safety and batterer accountability (Pence, 1999 ). The current study examined the extent to which Famil…

  • Developmental changes in sexual prejudice from early to late adolescence: The effects of gender, race, and ideology on different patterns of change

    Paul Poteat, V Paul Poteat et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2012•Cited by: 26•References: 8

This study documented significant changes in prejudice toward gay and lesbian individuals among adolescents from the ages of 12 to 18 years. Moreover, in line with developmental theories of prejudice, there was substantial variability in these patterns, partially predicted by the gender and ideological beliefs (reflected by social dominance orientation [SDO]) of individuals. Boys reported higher prejudice at age 12 than girls. SDO also accounted …

  • Online racial discrimination and the protective function of ethnic identity and self-esteem for African American adolescents

    Brendesha M Tynes, Adriana J Umaña‐taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2012•Cited by: 68•References: 27

A growing body of literature has shown that being victimized online is associated with poor mental health. Little is known about the factors that protect youth from the negative outcomes that may result from these victimization experiences, particularly those related to race. Using a risk and resilience framework, this study examined the protective function of ethnic identity and self-esteem among African Americans who experience online racial di…

  • Examining Systems Change in the Response to Domestic Violence: Innovative Applications of Multilevel Modeling

    Open Access•Shabnam Javdani, Nicole E Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Facilitating systems change in the response to domestic violence has been touted as a central goal in the effort to hold systems accountable and create a coordinated response for survivors. However, examination of systems change and whether particular social change efforts (e.g., coordinating councils) contribute to such change is a notoriously difficult research endeavor due in large part to methodological barriers, including those that stem fro…

  • Beliefs about affirmative action: A test of the group self-interest and racism beliefs models

Euna Oh, Chun Chung Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Diversity in Higher…•2010•Cited by: 13•References: 9

Two models of affirmative action attitudes (i.e., group self-interest and racism beliefs) were examined among a sample of racially diverse college students. Open-ended questions were included to provide students an opportunity to elaborate on their beliefs about affirmative action and beliefs about the existence of racial discrimination. Findings from logistic regression analysis on a subsample (n 376) provide support for both models; race (a pro…

  • Psychosocial costs of racism to Whites: Understanding patterns among university students

    Lisa B Spanierman, Nathan R Todd et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Counseling Psychology•2009•Cited by: 20•References: 7

This investigation adds to the growing body of scholarship on the psychosocial costs of racism to Whites (PCRW), which refer to consequences of being in the dominant position in an unjust, hierarchical system of societal racism. Extending research that identified 5 distinct constellations of costs of racism (L. B. Spanierman, V. P. Poteat, A. M. Beer, & P. I. Armstrong, 2006), the authors used multinomial logistic regression in the current study …

  • Validity and topic generality of a writing performance test

    Open Access•Hee-Kyung Lee, Carolyn J Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2007

The goal of the current study was to examine the validity and topic generality of a writing performance test designed to place international students into appropriate ESL courses at a large mid-western university. Because for each test administration the test randomly rotates three academic topics integrated with listening and reading sources, it is necessary to investigate the extent to which the three topics are compatible in terms of difficult…

  • Log-Multiplicative Models for Valued Social Relations

    Open Access•Carolyn J Anderson, Stanley Wasserman•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1995•References: 16

The methodology described here is designed for social networks and is based on the research of Holland and Leinhardt, Wasserman and Iacobucci, and Many others. Holland and Leinhardt termed the simplest model from their family of log-linear models p1. The models presented in this article are not log-linear-rather, they are log-multiplicative, in the spirit of other models described in this special issue. Our models generalize the p1 family of mode…
