Branding the Beast: Aleister Crowley as an Advertiser of the Occult
This article discusses the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) as an advertiser of the occult. Relying on theories of advertising and branding, it is argued that Crowley’s main branding strategy was the use of irony and humor in order to distance himself from other actors on the occult market. Furthermore, it is argued that this can be understood as a strategy of legitimization rooted in class consciousness, and more specifically in th…
Ars Congressus Cum Daemone: Aleister Crowley and the Knowledge and Conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel
This article analyses experiential knowledge in the writings of the British occultist Aleister Crowley’s (1875-1947) writings, and more specifically the so-called Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. I will first discuss Crowley’s own account of his attainment of communion with his Guardian Angel, which he set out to accomplish in 1900 and finally realised in 1906. Second, I will discuss a few key texts written by Crowley in whi…

Deus est Homo: The Concept of God in the Magical Writings of the Great Beast 666 (Aleister Crowley)
Despite the centrality of the concept of God in Christian theology and Western philosophy for over two millennia, little attention has been given the concept of God in twentieth-century occultism in general, and in the writings of Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) in particular. In this article it is argued that Crowley’s multifaceted and sometimes conflicting approaches to God, are dependent on five main factors: (1) his childhood experiences of Chri…

The Babalon Working 1946: L. Ron Hubbard, John Whiteside Parsons, and the Practice of Enochian Magic
In the spring of 1946 L. Ron Hubbard and John W. Parsons performed a series of magical rituals with the aim of incarnating the Thelemic goddess Babalon in a human being. Hubbard’s cooperation with Parsons, known as the Babalon Working, remains one of the most controversial events in Hubbard’s pre-Scientology days. This article sets out to describe the content of the magical rituals, as well as their purpose. It is argued that in order to fully un…

The Sociology Of The Construct Of Tradition And Import Of Legitimacy In Freemasonry
In institutionalised forms of esotericism from the eighteenth century onwards the construct of tradition is often connected to claims of legitimacy and authority, a fact that is perhaps most obvious in masonic initiatory societies. This chapter discusses the construct and function of tradition in conservative, liberal and fringe forms of Freemasonry. It also discusses the concept of tradition in religious discourse, and then examines the signific…

Nordic Satanism and Satanism Scares: The Dark Side of the Secular Welfare State
The authors examine the interaction between the practice of Satanism and widespread public concern over Satanism in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The authors analyse the unique features of Satanism and Satanism scares in the social and cultural context of Nordic “folk church” Lutheranism and the Nordic welfare state. They also discuss how and why in certain periods the fear of Satanism became one of the most visibl…
Research on esotericism in Scandinavia
The title of this paper can be understood in two senses. In the sense of ‘research on esotericism carried out by Scandinavian scholars’, the field is blossoming. Several dozen individuals, at various points in their academic careers, are pursuing research on some aspect of Western esotericism however the concept is defined. In the other conceivable sense, ‘research on Scandinavian esotericism’, the availability of academic studies is generally mo…
Challenging the Morals of Western Society: The Use of Ritualized Sex in Contemporary Occultism
This paper discusses the historical roots of the use of ritualized sex in contemporary occultism, with special focus on the teachings of Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Gerald B. Gardner (1884–1964) and Kenneth Grant (b. 1924). The notion that sexual magic is related to Hindu Tantric practices is addressed, and a detailed historical development of the use of ritualized sex—as illustrated by Crowley, Gardner, and Grant—is presented
