  • A mechanistic approach to tracing anthropometric charts

Open Access•Elena Spada, Giulio Gilli et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2015

OBJECTIVES: The Extended Mechanistic Growth Function (EMGF) method (Clementi et al. [1999]: Am J Med Genet 87:317-323) is a possible alternative to the Cole and Green LMS method ([1992] Stat Med 11:1305-1319) to construct cross-sectional anthropometric charts. It differs from the technique used by Kuczmarski et al. ([2002]: Vital Health Stat 11:1-190) to trace the CDC growth charts in that all centiles are simultaneously fitted with a single func…

  • What Is the Incidence of Cystic Fibrosis in Italy? Data from the National Registry (1988-2001)

Anna Bossi, Giovanni Casazza et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2004

The mean incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) among North Americans of European ancestry is 1 in 2,500. Studies carried out in different geographic areas report incidence values ranging from 1 in 1,800 to 1 in 8,500, suggesting that incidence has to be assessed specifically for any population. This paper represents the first attempt to evaluate the incidence of CF in Italy and its time-related changes following the discovery of the gene in 1989. Dat…

  • Assessment of skeletal maturity of the hand-wrist and knee

Open Access•Giorgio Aicardi, M Vignolo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2000

This study evaluated the influence of height growth and nutritional status on skeletal maturation of the knee and hand-wrist. Radiographs of 589 subjects (250 girls and 339 boys) from 2 to 15 years were rated according to Greulich-Pyle, TW-20 bone and TW-RUS, RWT knee, and FELS hand-wrist methods and a method combining FELS and RWT indicators. The subjects were referred to the Genoa University Paediatric Department from 1980 to 1987 for short sta…

  • Invited Review

    Open Access•Milani, Silvano Milani•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2000

Although microkinetic models are expected to play in the future the same role that macrokinetic models have played in the past, classic mechanistic growth functions are still worthy of study and may still provide insight into auxological problems. The rather rigid shape of macrokinetic models may ignore many interesting fluctuations of growth velocity, but a strong structure allows a robust estimate of growth kinetics even in the case of growth p…

  • Weight, height and arm circumference of children under 5 in the district of Mbarara, south-west Uganda

Open Access•I Cortinovis, Venanzio Vella et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1997

This paper describes the growth of weight, height and arm circumference (MUAC) in children aged under 5 years and living in the south-west area of Uganda. The survey was carried out in 1988 and was based on a random sample of 31 villages of the Mbarara district. A total of 4320 children were measured by a team of 20 trained assessors. From these children a reference group was made up of the 3654 known to be still alive after 1 year. Growth charts…

  • Fels, Greulich‐Pyle, and Tanner‐Whitehouse bone age assessments in a group of Italian children and adolescents

Open Access•M Vignolo, Milani et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

Assessments of skeletal maturity are usually made from handwrist radiographs, using either the method of Greulich‐Pyle (GP) or Tanner‐Whitehouse (TW). Recently the FELS method has been developed, and it represents a potentially valuable approach to skeletal age assessment. The present study evaluates the accuracy and precision of FELS skeletal age assessments compared with ratings by the GP and TW methods in a group of Italian children and adoles…

  • Italian standards for crown-heel length and head circumference at birth

Open Access•Anna Bossi, Milani et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

Cross-sectional standards for crown-heel length and head circumference at birth are presented, based on 16336 reference neonates born in six towns in North, Central and South Italy, between 1973 and 1981, and included in a multicentre survey of perinatal preventive medicine. Single liveborn infants, with no congenital anomalies, of mothers with no risk factor for pregnancy, such as diabetes, hypertension, vaginal bleeding, previous stillbirths or…
