  • Testing a Typology of Adaptations to Same-Sex Sexual Orientation among Men

    Open Access•Donald C Barrett, Lance M Pollack•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Previous research has yielded important understandings of how sexual minorities adjust to living in a heteronormative culture, but scholarly critiques of assimilation and Merton's research on adaptations to deviance suggest value in examining whether there are distinct types of adaptation. Applying Merton's definition of adaptations in anomic environments suggests that different patterns can be defined depending on the importance placed on assimi…

  • Gay Activism and Scholarship from the Front Lines: Contributions of Eric Rofes-A Memoriam

    Donald C Barrett•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2007•Cited by: 2

Eric Rofes, gay activist, writer, and scholar, died of a heart attack on June 26, 2006, at the age of 51. Though Eric's career start was an elementary school teacher, he quickly touched a wide swath of gay culture with writings on being a gay elementary school teacher and for the Gay Community News of Boston in the mid-1970s. In the mid-1980s he was director of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, and then later ofShanti in San Francisco. Most…

  • Whose Gay Community? Social Class, Sexual Self-Expression, and Gay Community Involvement

    Open Access•Donald C Barrett, Lance M Pollack•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2005•Cited by: 38•References: 16

The visible and political gay community has been characterized as an increasingly middle-class, white institution. It is hypothesized that this middle-class nature requires economic and psychosocial resources that are not available to the working class and, thus, may limit the expression of sexual orientation for the working class. An analysis of data from the multicity Urban Men's Health Study supports this hypothesis. Nine of 14 hypothesized ef…

  • Teenage Sexual Orientation, Adult Openness, and Status Attainment in Gay Males

    Open Access•Donald C Barrett, Lance M Pollack et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2002•Cited by: 13•References: 16

Research on the effects of sexual orientation on gay male status attainment has been hampered by the use of opportunistic samples and by the inability to control for family background and sexual orientation characteristics. This research uses data from the Urban Men's Health Study, a multicity probability sample, to examine the status attainment process among men who identify as gay or bisexual (N = 2,290). Logistic regression is used to measure …

  • Histories of substance use and risk behavior: Precursors to HIV seroconversion in homosexual men

Margaret A Chesney, Donald C Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 11

OBJECTIVES: This study compared history of substance use and episodic use in terms of HIV seroconversion. METHODS: A sample of 337 baseline HIV-negative gay men was followed for 6 years. Bivariate and survival analyses were used to compare 39 converters with nonconverters on substance use behaviors. RESULTS: Seroconverters were consistently more likely to report use of marijuana, nitrite inhalants, amphetamines, and cocaine than nonconverters. Co…

  • Redefining gay male anal intercourse behaviors: Implications for HIV prevention and research

Donald C Barrett, Gail Bolan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1998•References: 2

Research on gay male HIV risk typically groups subjects by whether they report any unprotected anal intercourse (UAI). Recent research suggests that men who consistently withdraw without ejaculation during UAI may represent a distinct group. Correlates of sexual behavior are examined (n = 1001) for men who report: 1) UAI to ejaculation (30% of subjects), 2) UAI with consistent withdrawal (24%), 3) protected anal intercourse only (23%), and 4) no …

  • The gay report on sexually transmitted diseases

    W W Darrow, D Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1981•Cited by: 16•References: 18

Most studies of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men have examined prevalence in clinic populations; for comparative purposes, we analyzed data from a survey of 4,329 gay men conducted in 1977. Among 4,212 respondents to the self-administered questionnaire, 66.8 per cent reported previous infection with pediculosis; 38.4 per cent, gonorrhea; 24.1 per cent, nonspecific urethritis; 18.1 per cent, venereal warts; 13.5 per cent, syphilis; …
