Randomized Controlled Trial of a Couples-Based HIV Intervention for Transgender Women and Their Partners
Untangling Discrimination
Black sexual minority men living with HIV (BSMM+) in the Southern United States encounter multiple forms of discrimination, which are associated with decreased HIV care engagement. We analyzed data from 166 BSMM + in the South to assess direct associations between experiences of racism, heterosexism, and HIV-related discrimination with HIV care engagement. We further investigated indirect associations through three mediators: internalized racism,…

History of Incarceration is Associated with Unmet Socioeconomic Needs and Structural Discrimination among Young Black Sexual Minority Men (SMM) in the United States
There is a dearth of research on incarceration among young Black sexual minority men (SMM). The current study aimed to assess the prevalence and association between unmet socioeconomic and structural needs and history of incarceration among young Black SMM. Between 2009 and 2015, young Black SMM (N = 1,774) in Dallas and Houston Texas were recruited to participate in an annual, venue-based, cross-sectional survey. We found that 26% of the sample …

Use of technology for delivery of mental health and substance use services to youth living with HIV
Disparities in HIV treatment outcomes among youth living with HIV (YLWH) present a challenge for ending the HIV epidemic. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence can be impacted by comorbidities such as mental health and substance use. Technology use has shown promise in increasing access to mental health and substance use services. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted formative research to describe the relationship between mental health, …
An Approach to Reducing Problematic Data in an Acasi Sexual Behavior Assessment
Minimizing error in self-reported sexual behavior could reduce investigators' likelihood of rejecting truly successful interventions to decrease HIV and STI transmission risk. Sexual behavior assessments can elicit problematic data. This may manifest in the form of elevated levels of non-response, inaccurate point estimates, or misclassification errors resulting in inappropriately answering or, perhaps more importantly, skipping questions. We pro…
Resilience and depression in young Black men who have sex with men
Although the health of young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) is typically discussed in terms of HIV, they are significantly affected by depression. The present study explored protective and risk pathways to depressive symptoms among YBMSM within a social-ecological framework. A cross-sectional sample of 1,817 YBMSM in two large, southern cities in the United States completed a survey of sociodemographic characteristics as well as individu…

Social networks and social support among ball-attending African American men who have sex with men and transgender women are associated with HIV-related outcomes
The House Ball Community (HBC) is an understudied network of African American men who have sex with men and transgender women, who join family-like houses that compete in elaborate balls in cities across the United States. From 2011 to 2012, we surveyed 274 recent attendees of balls in the San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on social networks, social support, and HIV-related behaviours. Participants with a high percentage of alters who were support…
The Role of the Primary Romantic Relationship in HIV Care Engagement Outcomes Among Young HIV-Positive Black Men Who Have Sex with Men
Knowing Your Status and Knowing Your Partner’s Status Is Really Where It Starts”
Gay and bisexual men are at disproportionate risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. While prevention efforts often emphasize consistent condom use, there is growing evidence that men are using seroadaptive safer-sex strategies, such as serosorting and seropositioning. This qualitative analysis of 204 HIV-negative and HIV-positive gay and bisexual men explored the ways that a sexual partner’s HIV status can influence safer-sex stra…

An Intervention to Help Community‐Based Organizations Implement an Evidence‐Based HIV Prevention Intervention
Considerable resources have been spent developing and rigorously testing HIV prevention intervention models, but such models do not impact the AIDS pandemic unless they are implemented effectively by community‐based organizations (CBOs) and health departments. The Mpowerment Project (MP) is being implemented by CBOs around the US. It is a multilevel, evidence‐based HIV prevention program for young gay/bisexual men that targets individual, interpe…
Effects of Interview Mode on Assessments of Erectile and Ejaculatory Dysfunction among Men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
In a randomized experiment (N = 249; age 50 + years), this study examined if self-reports of erectile dysfunction (ED) and ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) symptomatology were influenced by the mode of interview administration (computer-assisted self-interview [CASI], audio computer-assisted self-interview [ACASI], or computer-assisted personal interview [CAPI; involving an interviewer]). This study also examined if mode moderated person variables h…
Testing a Typology of Adaptations to Same-Sex Sexual Orientation among Men
Previous research has yielded important understandings of how sexual minorities adjust to living in a heteronormative culture, but scholarly critiques of assimilation and Merton's research on adaptations to deviance suggest value in examining whether there are distinct types of adaptation. Applying Merton's definition of adaptations in anomic environments suggests that different patterns can be defined depending on the importance placed on assimi…

HIV Transmission Risk at a Gay Bathhouse
Previous research found up to 14% of men who go to bathhouses engage in unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and tend to have multiple sexual partners during their bathhouse visit, thus appearing to support concerns that such venues could foster acute outbreaks of new HIV infections. We conducted a two-stage probability sample of men exiting a gay bathhouse, and focused our analysis on whether the partnering patterns of the men who engaged in UAI p…
Association of Co-Occurring Psychosocial Health Problems and Increased Vulnerability to HIV/Aids Among Urban Men Who Have Sex With Men
Objectives. We measured the extent to which a set of psychosocial health problems have an additive effect on increasing HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional household probability telephone sample of MSM in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Results. Psychosocial health problems are highly intercorrelated among urban MSM. Greater numbers of health problems are significantly and pos…

Questionnaire response bias and face‐to‐face interview sample bias in sexuality research
Response bias in self‐administered questionnaires (SAQs) and sample bias in face‐to‐face interviews (FTF) are examined. SAQ study results suggest (a) nonresponse bias is of chief concern in studies of masturbation, (b) partial responders fail to answer sexuality questions because they are uneasy making personal disclosures of sexual information, and (c) this latter threat varies inversely with sexual knowledge and experience indices. No significa…
Suicide Attempts Among Gay and Bisexual Men
Objectives. We examined lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts and psychosocial correlates in a large population-based sample of men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. A telephone probability sample of US urban MSM (n = 2881) were interviewed between November 1996 and February 1998. Results. Twenty-one percent had made a suicide plan; 12% had attempted suicide (almost half of those 12% were multiple attempters). Most who attempted suicide mad…

We are gratified to note that Mathy does not have any substantive criticisms of our research. However, we would like to address 2 of Mathy’s points: first, that other population-based studies on this topic have been conducted, and second, that our analyses lacked cultural sensitivity. As our comment that prior research has been “primarily based on opportunistic samples” does not deny that some population-based research has occurred (which we cite…
