Disembodying CEO leadership through AI-assisted speechwriting
This paper examines the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate a speech for the CEO of a hypothetical publicly traded coal mining company, intended to be delivered at that company’s annual general meeting. Using ChatGPT , we prompt this Large Language Model (LLM) to generate the CEO’s speech. We then analyze the speech using close reading, highlighting important language features, critical ethical considerations, and broader implications…
Evaluating assertions by a Wells Fargo CEO of a ‘return to ethical conduct’
We explore the language used by the CEO of Wells Fargo, Timothy Sloan, to sustain claims that Wells Fargo and its staff would behave in an ethically appropriate way in the future. We focus on Sloan’s opening written statement to the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs of the United States Senate on 3 October 2017. This statement was intended to salvage Wells Fargo’s reputation after it had been savaged by widespread allegations of une…
The transformational leader as pedagogue, physician, architect, commander, and saint
We analyse the corpus of CEO letters to stockholders that were signed by a widely revered business leader, Jack Welch, during his tenure as CEO of the General Electric Company [GE], 1981—2000. The Rhetoric of a Juggernaut
This paper addresses an issue of public policy regarding the Internet. It is motivated by the belief that the Internet is in danger of being controlled by a few megacorporations. We seek to understand the nature of such control by performing a textual analysis of the ‘Internet Policy Statement’ released by AOLTimeWarner in 2001. Our analysis reveals hidden assumptions, ideology and metaphor; highlights how rhetoric influences social expectations;…
In the Service of Corporate Rhetoric
This article highlights the capacity for ideograph-like signs that are deeply embedded in cultural consciousness to be appropriated for the purpose of sustaining the rhetorical agendas of corporations. Focus is applied to the events of September 11, 2001, and to the use of the term 9/11 in the text of a letter to share-holders, signed by the corporate leaders of Southwest Airlines and published in that company’s annual report for 2001. We illustr…
The Internet in Undergraduate Management Education
This paper presents an alternative perspective of the pedagogical and other merits of the Internet in undergraduate management education. It highlights the importance of sensitising management students to the ideological character of the Internet and to the Internet's capacity for altering relationships, power structures and ways of ‘managing’ organisations. The need for there to be a critical appreciation of the effects of metonymy and metaphor …
A Factor-Analytic Study of the Construct Validity of Holland's Self-Directed Search Test
A random sample of 2626 Canadian professional accountants was mailed a questionnaire containing the Self-Directed Search instrument (SDS) developed by Holland. The 1206 completed questionnaires were used to obtain more evidence about the construct validity of the SDS. A method of common factor analysis was used. In general, it was found that the structure of the SDS instrument as a whole is quite clear and that most of the items which are suppose…
