  • The Enduring Effects of Discrimination: Testing the Theory of African American Offending for Intimate Partner Violence among Black and Latino/a Adults

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman, Egbert Zavala•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2026

Racial-ethnic discrimination is a type of injustice that influences the lives of Black and Latinx individuals. It can lead to a variety of negative outcomes, such as intimate partner violence (IPV). To develop a greater theoretical understanding of how discrimination may lead to IPV perpetration, we drew on the Theory of African American Offending (TAAO). This theory is useful because of the focus on racial-ethnic injustices, mediating processes,…

  • Women’s Life Strains, Race/Ethnicity, and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

While women manifest high rates of Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization, they may perpetrate violence and levels vary by race/ethnicity. Drawing on racial/ethnic extensions of General Strain Theory (GST), I examine IPV perpetration among Black, Latina, and White women using the Add Health data. I found that life strains, especially financial problems and prior IPV victimization, were associated with IPV perpetration among all women suppo…

  • The Impact of Early Life Victimization and Prejudice on Adult Socioeconomic Well‐Being Among Sexual Minority Populations

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2026

Sexual minority populations experience higher rates of violent victimization and prejudice than heterosexual individuals. While both have long‐ranging negative effects, when they happen earlier in life (childhood, adolescence) they have the potential to undermine educational processes, self‐esteem, mental health, and physical health, and contribute to reductions in adult socioeconomic well‐being. I drew on a theory about victimization in the life…

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Mosaico•2025

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Dados•2025•References: 19

Encontramos a) diferenças táticas marca…

Me…

  • The contribution of intimate partner violence to socioeconomic inequality among Black, Latina, and White women

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Women on average make less money than men, and this is particularly acute for Black and Latina women. While there are several contributors to socioeconomic inequality, violent victimization coming at critical times (adolescence, early adulthood) is one such contributor. Intimate partner violence (IPV) particularly impacts women, with Black and Latina women facing higher levels. Thus, it is important to consider for understanding inequality. This …

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Plural•2024

  • The Effects of Adolescent and Early Adulthood Intimate Partner Violence on Adult Socioeconomic Well-being

    Joanne M Kaufman, Christine M Walsh•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Violent victimization disrupts lives and has the potential to undermine socioeconomic well-being. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a particular concern because rates rise during adolescence to high rates in early adulthood. Prior literature has been hampered by specialized samples, short time-periods, and limited theoretical development. We draw from theorizing on victimization in the life course and the stress process model to analyze the Add …

  • Gendered Responses to Serious Strain: The Argument for a General Strain Theory of Deviance

    Joanne M Kaufman•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2009

This paper expands and builds on newer avenues in research on gender and general strain theory (GST). I accomplish this by focusing on serious strains that are relevant for males and females, including externalizing and internalizing forms of negative emotions, and including multiple gendered deviant outcomes. Using the Add Health dataset, I find strong support for the impact of serious strains on both types of negative emotions and different for…

  • Stigmatized Individuals and the Process of Identity

    Open Access•Joanne M Kaufman, Cathryn Johnson•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2004•Cited by: 32•References: 60

We conducted intensive interviews with ten gays and ten lesbians drawing on research and theorizing on gay and lesbian identity, symbolic interactionism, and stigma. Key concepts from symbolic interactionism, reflected appraisals and situational identity negotiation, provide a more coherent theoretical way to examine identity development and the situated complexity of identity negotiation and disclosure among gays and lesbians. Romantic relations…
