Magnetostratigraphic study of the Melka Kunture archaeological site (Ethiopia) and its chronological implications
Early Pleistocene Presence of Acheulian Hominins in South India
Dates from a site in southeast India imply an early migration of Homo through Eurasia about 1.1 to 1.5 million years ago.
A late-Holocene charcoal record from Lake Masoko, SW Tanzania
Charcoal analysis from a short core in a small tropical crater lake (Lake Masoko, SW Tanzania) reveals changes in charred-particle deposition and properties, consistent with high climatic variability for the last 4200 years. This is evidenced by automated image analysis of charcoal size distributions, thermal resistant carbon (soot) and black carbon elemental analysis. Charcoal-particle transport in the lake decreases during dry spells, and incre…
Excavations at the Palaeolithic Site of Attirampakkam, South India
The sensitivity of a Tanzanian crater lake to catastrophic tephra input and four millennia of climate change
Diatom genera in many large East African lakes change little throughout the Holocene period suggesting relatively stable ecological conditions and some resilience to environmental change. Ecosystem stability is less common in smaller, more sensitive lakes, such as those within volcanic craters, where external impacts can cause abrupt and rapid fluctuations. A 4100-year diatom and cyanobacteria pigment record from Lake Massoko, a volcanic crater l…
Reassessment of the paleoenvironment and preservation of hominid fossils from Hadar, Ethiopia
Samples of paleosols from locality AL‐333, known for numerous specimens of Australopithecus afarensis , were analyzed in order to reconstruct the original soils and environment of burial of the associated fossil hominids. The bones were found in swale‐like features, within the calcareous and coarse‐grained basal portion of a paleosol. This is more like an assemblage of bones buried during a single depositional episode, such as a flood, than an as…
Laser raman microanalysis of fossil tooth enamel
Pliocene hominids from the Hadar formation, Ethiopia (1973–1977)
The large collections of fossil hominid remains from Hadar, Ethiopia, derive from the Afar Triangle of the continental East African Rift. The fossils constitute much of the paratype series of Australopithecus afarensis (Johanson, White, and Coppens, 1978*). Citations for starred (*) references appear in Appendix 2, Publications. The primitive morphology exhibited by these hominids is consistent with their chronologic placement between 3.0 and 4.0…
