  • Naughty Schoolgirl on Her Knees”: Understanding the Role of Gendered Stereotypes in Porn Classification Strategies Through a Q-Methodology

  • The (re)production of ‘normal’ sexuality: A study of sexuality education for students with psychological and behavioural challenges in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Emma Fritz, Samira Van Bohemen•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2025

Dutch school-based sexuality education, renowned for its progressiveness and positive impact on sexual health, has been criticised for advancing a limited, yet dominant discourse on sexuality shaped by societal and political factors. Critics have argued that it perpetuates a narrow conception of ‘normal’ sexuality tied to neoliberal, secular, able-bodied, white, heteronormative norms. This inadvertently excludes certain social groups, such as peo…

  • Framing the Windows of Prostitution: Unfolding Histories in Amsterdam’s Redesign of Its Famous Red-Light District

Open Access•Sarah Fijen, Samira Van Bohemen•ARTICLE•Sexuality Research and Social…•2023•References: 8

Introduction This research is about the power of documents as recorders of history and preservers of institutional memory. Specifically, the study examines Project 1012, a municipal reform project in Amsterdam’s famous Red-Light District. Methods We performed a critical discourse analysis on 10 policy briefs leading up to and following the implementation of Project 1012 between 2007 and 2020. Results Our study reveals that the documents actively …

Open Access•Samira Van Bohemen, Sophie De Graaf•ARTICLE•Sociology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Building on previous work about cultural informalisation and the growing urban-rural divide in western democracies, this article studies symbolic boundary work as performed by white youths living in rural areas in the Netherlands. We conducted a micro-sociological analysis of how these youths celebrate regional festivals in the Netherlands, and particularly the meanings they attach to their affective displays of intoxication and sexuality. We sho…

  • Techno's Sexual Counter-Space: Ecstasy and Electronics as Technologies of White Sex

    Open Access•Samira Van Bohemen, Anouk Roeling•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 53

This article aims to lift the veil on white sexuality by studying how young people 'perform' this within the Rotterdam techno scene. It relies on previous work that has highlighted that white sexuality is, like whiteness itself, rarely recognized, let alone referred to as white. This is also true of the sexuality practised by young people in the techno world. Our extensive observations and in-depth interviews conducted for this study identified t…

  • Euroscepticism among Dutch Leftist and Rightist Populist Constituencies: How can the U‐Curve be Understood

Open Access•Samira Van Bohemen, Willem De Koster et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 37

The U‐curve in euroscepticism is well established: both leftist and rightist populist constituencies are more eurosceptic than voters for establishment parties. Using rich survey data on a country with both constituencies represented in parliament (the Netherlands; n=1,296), we examine why euroscepticism drives populist voting. Our analyses demonstrate that euroscepticism is part of the well‐established link between both 1) distrust in politics a…

  • Progressiveness and the New Right: The Electoral Relevance of Culturally Progressive Values in the Netherlands

    Willem De Koster, P Achterberg et al.•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2014•Cited by: 33•References: 46

Whereas electoral support for new-rightist parties is often understood as driven by ethnocentric anti-immigrant sentiments, scholars have noted that new-rightist politicians have, surprisingly, stressed culturally progressive arguments in the last decade. Using recent Dutch survey data (N = 1,302) especially collected for this purpose, the article analyses the electoral relevance of three types of cultural progressiveness for voting for the new r…

  • Negotiating Gender through Fun and Play: Radical Femininity and Fantasy in the Red Hat Society

Open Access•Samira Van Bohemen, Liesbet Van Zoonen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 35

The Red Hat Society (RHS) is a relatively new and international women's network that offers "fun" and "friendship" specifically for women over fifty. Its members, the Red Hatters, are easily recognized in the streets by their red hats and otherwise purple attire, giving the RHS its unique flavor of leisure combined with expressive public performance. In this article, we use interviews and observations to study how the fun experiences aimed at by …

  • Performing the ‘fun’ self: How members of the Red Hat Society negotiate cultural discourses of femininity and ageing

Open Access•Samira Van Bohemen, Liesbet Van Zoonen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Since its foundation in 1998 the ‘Red Hat Society’ (RHS) has become a popular international movement of women aged over 50 that is known for its distinct group performances. Red Hatters show up in public spaces wearing red hats, purple clothing and sometimes red gloves, and engage in various fun and frivolous activities. Previous studies about the RHS have found that its main appeal is that it creates an escape from women’s day-to-day life experi…
