  • Configurations of Craft

Jochem Kroezen, Davide Ravasi et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Annals•2021

The concept of craft has long lived in the margins of organizational research and has typically been equated with a primitive form of manufacturing. Craft, however, seems to have had a resurgence, and is now increasingly associated with alternative approaches to work and organization in contemporary society. Yet, despite growing research on the phenomenon, insights have remained fragmented due to a lack of common theoretical infrastructure. In an…

  • Social Media and the Formation of Organizational Reputation

Open Access•Meghan Etter, Michael Etter et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Review•2019

The rise of social media is changing how evaluative judgments about organizations are produced and disseminated in the public domain. In this article we discuss how these changes question traditional assumptions that research on media reputation rests upon, and we offer an alternative framework that begins to account for how the more active role of audiences, the changing ways in which they express their evaluations, and the increasing heterogene…

  • Institutional Pressures and Organizational Identity

    Open Access•Katrin Schreiter, Davide Ravasi•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article explores the case of Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau (DWH)—a furniture and interior manufacturer founded in 1898—through state socialism after 1945 and reprivatization in the 1990s. Our analysis suggests that the firm's survival through multiple systemic disruptions was partly due to the preservation of a unique identity despite heavy institutional pressures for conformity. DWH adopted a “mixed conformity” strategy that attempted to pi…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Identity

Michael G Pratt, Majken Schultz et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Organizational…•2016

What happens when you take one of the most fundamental concepts in social science and apply it to one of the most ubiquitous forms of human collectives? This handbook strives to answer this question by exploring what has become a “root construct” in the field of management and organization studies: organizational identity (OI). The handbook provides a road-map to the OI field, both theoretically and methodologically, across seven sections: 1) Map…

  • Organizing Thoughts and Connecting Brains

Ileana Stigliani, Davide Ravasi•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2012

A growing body of research is drawing attention to the material practices that support verbal exchanges and cognitive processes in collective sensemaking. In this study, building on an ethnographic study of a design consulting firm, we develop a process model that accounts for the interplay between conversational and material practices in the transition from individual to group-level sensemaking, and we begin to unpack how the “materialization” o…

  • Responding to Organizational Identity Threats

Davide Ravasi, Majken Schultz•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2006

In this paper, we present a longitudinal study of organizational responses to environmental changes that induce members to question aspects of their organization's identity. Our findings highlight the role of organizational culture as a source of cues supporting “sensemaking” action carried out by leaders as they reevaluate their conceptualization of their organization, and as a platform for “sensegiving” actions aimed at affecting internal perce…
