Food intake and nutrition in children 1–4 years of age in Yucatan, Mexico
The poor relationship between food intake rates and nutritional status is probably explained by the interaction between high disease incidence and insufficient energy intake. These conditions are endemic in Yucatan due to widespread poor housing, water and sanitation conditions
Homegarden Production and Productivity in a Mayan Community of Yucatan
Infant Nutrition in a Poor Mayan Village of Yucatan is Related to an Energy Deficiency Diet That a Course on Nutrition Could Not Overcome
We measured the weight and length of 84 infants from 1 to 60 months of age in a Mayan village. Length (HAZ) and weight (WAZ) standardized to age decreased rapidly after 4 to 6 months of age and continued falling through 60 months. Sixty-one percent of the infants had WAZ scores <−1. A 24-hour dietary recall showed that infants with <−1 WAZ have an average daily energy intake 72% of that recommended. An 18-hour nutrition course resulted in a margi…
Changes in a Rural Community (Yucatan, Mexico) Associated with Improvements in Production and Productivity
The World Food Summit, Rome, in 1996 estimated the undernourished population at almost 800 million. In Mexico, the highest level of undernourishment among children (27%) is recorded in the state of Yucatan. Improvements in agricultural production were carried out in a traditional Mayan farming village in the poorest area of Yucatan. Milpa crops including maize, beans, and squash yields were improved by the use of fertilizers, mulching, and herbic…
