Taiwan, the first country in Asia to provide same-sex couples a legal right to marriage, has witnessed furious debate on both sides. To understand this debate, we combined content analysis and the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) method to capture themes and states of mind reflected in the news articles. Arguments based in human rights and reflecting heterosexual preferences which were observed elsewhere also dominated the discourses in T…

We tested the internal reliability and predictive validity of a new 4-item Short Social Dominance Orientation (SSDO) scale among adults in 20 countries, using 15 languages ( N = 2,130). Low scores indicate preferring group inclusion and equality to dominance. As expected, cross-nationally, the lower people were on SSDO, the more they endorsed more women in leadership positions, protecting minorities, and aid to the poor. Multilevel moderation mod…

  • Lesbians in Empirical Psychological Research

    I-Ching Lee, I‐ching Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2012

Lesbians have been consistently ignored in empirical psychological research. The current research extends Lee and Crawford's (2007 Lee, I.-C. and Crawford, M. 2007. Lesbians and bisexual women in the eyes of scientific psychology. Feminism & Psychology, 17: 109–127. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) comprehensive review, which used both quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze the amount and kind of research on lesbians…

    I-Ching Lee, I‐ching Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2011•Cited by: 38•References: 14

A meta-analysis examined the extent to which socio-structural and psycho-cultural characteristics of societies correspond with how much gender and ethnic/racial groups differ on their support of group-based hierarchy. Robustly, women opposed group-based hierarchy more than men did, and members of lower power ethnic/racial groups opposed group-based hierarchy more than members of higher power ethnic/racial groups did. As predicted by social domina…

  • Changing Boundaries of Ethnic Identity and Feelings Toward Ingroup/ Outgroup

    Open Access•I-Ching Lee, I‐ching Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2011•References: 34

Subjective group identification may not always be based on common biological origins or group salience, but rather, due to changes in group power. The present cross-temporal meta-analysis documents the transformation of Taiwan residents' identification as both Taiwanese and Chinese during recent decades, in which the legitimacy of Chinese power over Taiwan was changed. The relations between identification and feelings toward Taiwanese and Chinese…

  • The living arrangement may differentially influence IDU parents' motivation to reduce HIV risk as a function of gender

Michael D Miller, Michael Copenhaver et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2010

Studies that examine data from drug-abusing parents typically investigate the impact of parental behavior on their children's well-being and focus almost exclusively on the impact of mothers. Other approaches have examined the level of parental involvement among parents in drug treatment and find that a higher level of parental involvement is related to lower levels of addiction severity. Recent research examines the specific role of fathers and …

    Open Access•I-Ching Lee, I‐ching Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 29

This research examines the cultural origins of sexism and how it is enacted within cultures. The harmonious tenor of Taiwanese collectivism and the competitive individualism of American culture are hypothesized to afford benevolent sexism and hostile sexism, respectively. Whereas hostile sexism was expected to affect Americans' bias in favor of men more than benevolent sexism, benevolent sexism should affect Taiwanese bias favoring men more than …
