  • Measuring Tragedy—and Drawing Its Borders

    Open Access•Franco Moretti, Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2024

The present article introduces the METRA project, a project within which 22 researchers coordinated by Professor Franco Moretti will analyze the tragic form across 12 European cultures, making use of literary geography, comparative poetics, and a broad array of computational tools. This special issue of Transilvania represents a preliminary foray into the project’s topic, meant to present METRA’s methodology and discuss the generic, chronological…

  • Tragedy in Romanian Literature

    Open Access•Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2024•Cited by: 2

This article examines the presence and manifestation of tragedy as a literary genre in Romanian literature until the establishment of the communist regime. My analysis begins with an overview of the arguments that various critics, playwrights, and essayists have invoked in trying to explain the alleged absence of tragedy in Romanian culture and continues with a discussion about the errors and confusions inherent to such a position. Starting from …

  • The production of gender-specific scholarly literature in Romania

Open Access•Ionela Vlase, Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2023

This article examines the predictors of gender-specific literature production in the field of social sciences and humanities (SSH). The research used bibliometric information on 1132 gender-related articles by authors with Romanian affiliations. Binary logistic regression shows the individual and institutional factors of a paper’s likelihood of including gender-related words in its title. Weak institutionalisation of Gender Studies marks this nat…

  • Beyond the Iron Curtain

tefan Baghiu, Ștefan Baghiu et al.•BOOK•Beyond the Iron Curtain•2022

Drawing on methodologies pertaining to Digital Humanities, World Literature, and Comparative Literature, the volume aims to challenge some of the enduring clichés regarding the literary production of Romanian communism. The first section focuses on socialist realism, socialist modernism, representations of the rural, and rural modernity. The second section deals with literary cosmopolitanism, literary dissidence, countercultural literary producti…

  • Genurile romanului românesc (1933-1947). O analiză cantitativă

Open Access•Andrei Terian, Teona Farmatu et al.•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2021

This article puts forward a quantitative account of the subgenres of the Romanian novel during the 1933-1947 period. It shows the massive domination of the social novel and the Bildungsroman and analyzes the dynamics of genre and popular literature – adventure novels, detective fiction, SF, etc. – within the first period of massive literary production in Romanian literature. The article is the result of the MDRR (Muzeul Digital al Romanului Român…

  • Căldură mare. Temperatura pasiunilor în Ion de Liviu Rebreanu

    Open Access•Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article aims to explore the meanings and functions of temperature in Liviu Rebreanu’s novel Ion. The conclusions of my research are paradoxical from at least two points of view: first, the Romanian writer uses a language that is at once rudimentary and subtle, encoding a small number of meanings, but in a discreet manner; then, Rebreanu creates a genuine scale of passions arranged on the axis cold (death) – warmth (life), but at the same tim…

  • Geografia romanului românesc (1933-1947)

Open Access•Ștefan Baghiu, Andrei Terian et al.•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article analyzes the ways in which the Romanian novel published between 1933-1947 represents foreign cities, towns, peripheries, and villages in the fictional worlds. It asserts the democratization of the narrative universe through the planetary perspective of the novels and discusses the birth of the Global South imagery. The search was conducted on a corpus of 700 novels in the MDRR archive. The data is disposed through quantifying recurre…

  • Neoextractivism, or the birth of magical realism as world literature

    Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2021•Cited by: 1

In recent years, literary criticism has shown increased interest towards the manner in which fiction depicts (neo)extractivism as a set of practices whereby large quantities of natural resources are exploited for export. However, scholars have overlooked the manifestation of this phenomenon in areas and epochs other than post-1945 Latin America. Based on a close reading of two Romanian interwar novels – Cezar Petrescu's Pământ și cer and Mihail S…

  • Genurile romanului românesc (1901-1932). O analiză cantitativă

Open Access•Andrei Terian, Daiana Gârdan et al.•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2020

Combining the instruments of quantitative analysis with those of genre theory, the present article studies the ratio, characteristics, and tendencies underpinning the most important subgenres of the Romanian novel between 1901 and 1932. Among these subgenres, we lay special emphasis on those of popular fiction, on the social, historical, sentimental, psychological, and philosophical novel, as well as on the so-called “event novel”. The conclusion…

  • The Poetics of the Hypercycle in Mircea Cărtărescu’s Solenoid

    Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Life Writing•2020•References: 1

This essay analyses the most recent novel of Romanian author Mircea Cărtărescu (Solenoid, 2015). To this end, I will use a specific extension of career construction theory in the field of literary research that focuses on the notion of a ‘late-career novel’. After a short presentation of the theoretical framework and the evolution of Cărtărescu’s career, my approach turns to the hybrid nature of Solenoid, which reveals the complex (meta)narrative…

The Geography of the Romanian Novel (1901-1932): Spaces from Abroad This article charts the main cities mentioned in the Romanian novel published between 1901 and 1932 based on the corpus of novels created by the research project The Digital Museum of the Romanian Novel 1901-1932 (around 370 digitized novels). The main discoveries that our distant reading of the geography in these novels revealed are that the planet is covered in the Romanian nov…

  • Faces of modernity in romanian literature

    Open Access•Andrei Terian•ARTICLE•Alea Estudos Neolatinos•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This study analyses the manner in which Romanian criticism chose to define and outline literary modernity. From this point of view, I have highlighted a series of deficiencies in the aforementioned endeavors, among which the reductive vision on modernism, which is limited either to a strictly formal meaning (as literary technique) or to a substantial one (as ideological attitude), the emergence of a non-differentiated concept of modernism, which …
