Pai Cultural Change (Response to Braatz)
Bands of Gardeners: Pai Sociopolitical Structure
In a recent AIQ article Timothy Braatz concluded that identifying Pai subtribes as significant and enduring sociopolitical groups, Dobyns and Euler over-formalized aboriginal Pai organization (our emphasis).' Braatz's article criticized statements in an ethnohistorical monograph we published in 1970.2 Braatz reached his conclusion using such tortured logic and disregarding so many data that we here offer a corrective comment. We discuss these top…

and is. The majority of ethnological reports on North American Indian cultures that were written by American-trained ethnologists during the period 1910-40 were couched in the 'ethnographic present' and purported to describe the 'aboriginal' cultures of various Indian groups.2 That is, anthropologists having a normative perception of culture pattern essentially ignored historical changes in Native American cultures and behaviors.' Effects of Forest Fires on Archaeological Resources at Grand Canyon National Park
For a number of years archaeologists have discussed the effects of forest fires on archaeological resources. Studies under experimental conditions and of sites after they were burned form the bulk of this effort but, for the most part, they have not been published. This article examines the fire history of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and the effects of the Dutton Point wildfire on prehistoric architecture and artifacts—particularly ceramics…

Atlanto‐occipital fusion and spondylolisthesis in an Anasazi skeleton from bright angel ruin, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The skeleton of a middle‐aged female showing an unusual pattern of congenital, traumatic, and degenerative pathology was recovered from a small Kayenta Anasazi site located near the confluence of Bright Angel Creek with the Colorado River in the Inner Gorge of Grand Canyon. The atlas is fused with the base of the skull and C2 is fused with C3. The cervical region was subjected to hyperextension, perhaps through use of a tumpline, with resultant r…
Human Behavior, Demography, and Paleoenvironment on the Colorado Plateaus
Archaeological and paleoenvironmental data are integrated in an investigation of culture change among the Anasazi of the American Southwest by a conceptual model of the interaction among environment, population, and behavior, the major determinants of human adaptive systems. Geological, palynological, and dendrochronological reconstructions of low and high frequency environmental variability coupled with population trends are used to specify peri…

The Pinto Basin Complex at Grand Canyon, Arizona
This paper presents previously unpublished data regarding the occurrence of the Archaic Pinto Basin Complex at Grand Canyon and discusses the implications of these to the hypothesis that it was related to the Grand Canyon Split-Twig Figurine Complex which, in part, has a similar antiquity and geographic distribution. It also compares the Grand Canyon figurines with those of similar age from Cowboy Cave in southeastern Utah

The Colorado Plateaus: Cultural Dynamics and Paleoenvironment: Prehistoric cultural changes on the Colorado Plateaus were contemporaneous with environmental changes.
Convergent archeological, geological, palynological, dendrochronological, and radiometric data provide a paleoenvironmental record for the American Southwest at a level of detail and time resolution not previously achieved. Many prehistoric cultural and demographic changes on the Colorado Plateaus coincided with environmental fluctuations defined by precisely dated geoclimatic and bioclimatic indicators. These coincidences support the interpretat…

Southern Paiute Archaeology
Through the use of the direct historical method and analysis of materials from more than 250 sites that indicate Southern Paiute occupation, a reconstruction of the culture history of this ethnic group is attempted. The data permit the following hypotheses: that the Southern Paiute were essentially a Desert culture people with the addition of agriculture in the south; that they entered the Southwest and the southern Great Basin about A.D. 1150 or…
The Red Butte Lithic Sites Near Grand Canyon, Arizona
Surface collections from three sites at Red Butte, near Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, produced small, concave-based Pinto points, as well as fragmentary Ventana-Amargosa forms. In addition, a wide range of lithic tools was found. Lateral and basal grinding on several points suggest that at least one preceramic component is represented. No points characteristic of the ceramic period were obtained, but a few potsherds dating A.D. 1000-1200 were…

Ethnohistory in the United States
This paper reviews briefly the development of ethnohistory in the United States and discusses current involvement by American ethnohistorians in analysis and validity of oral tradition and documents in terms of cultural process. Ethnic Group Land Rights in the Modern State: Three Case Studies
All over the world, conflicts of interest arise in modern states between government agencies charged with constructing large public works and citizens whose occupancy of the lands involved would be altered. Such conflicts are compounded when the land in dispute is held by a special ethnic enclave enjoying unique legal status — Indians on reservations in the United States, ejidos in Mexico, or comunidades indígenas in Peró, aborgines in Australia,…

Environmental Adaptation at Sia Pueblo
The Keresan speaking pueblo of Sia, located on Jemez Creek several miles from its confluence with the Rio Grande in central New Mexico, has long been noted for its extreme conservatism and resistance to acculturation, stemming primarily from the Hispanic period which began in the 16th century. The singular geographic and environmental position of this pueblo, however, has also played a not inconsiderable role in their reticency. Situated between …

The intention of this paper is to present the data concerning (a) the attempts of these Indians to make their own decision…

An Unusual Masonry Wall in a Kayenta Anasazi Cliff Site
Located in deep, narrow limestone canyons draining into the Little Colorado River in the vicinity of Wupatki Basin in northern Arizona are numerous small masonrywalled cliff ruins.
