  • Does the Empowering Function of the Belief in a Just World Generalise? Broad-base Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Evidence

Open Access•Jonathan Bartholomaeus, Peter Strelan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2024

The empowering function of the belief in a just world for the self (BJW-self) has been suggested as one mechanism by which BJW-self promotes positive psychological functioning for the individual. In this investigation we seek to understand if this empowerment function generalises to a broad range of positive and negative psychological variables and whether the function can be observed outside of tightly controlled experimental designs. We use a m…

  • The Empowering Function of the Belief in a Just World for the Self: Trait-Level and Experimental Tests of Its Association With Positive and Negative Affect

Open Access•Jonathan Bartholomaeus, Nalalia Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2023

Belief in a just world for the self (BJW-self) is a resource that promotes adaptive functioning. We theorize that BJW-self has such an effect because it is empowering. This article reports on four studies ( N = 967) testing whether BJW-self encourages more positive and less negative affect indirectly through empowerment. There was support for this hypothesis at a trait level across all studies, and specifically in Study 1. Experimental evidence, …

  • Age‐related differences in sequence learning: Findings from two visuo‐motor sequence learning tasks

Open Access•Kristi Urry, Nalalia Burns et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2018•References: 47

The Serial Reaction Time Task ( SRTT ) is thought to assess implicit learning, which seems to be preserved with age. However, the reaction time ( RT ) measures employed on implicit‐like tasks might be too unreliable to detect individual differences. We investigated whether RT ‐based measures mask age effects by comparing the performance of 43 younger and 35 older adults on SRTT and an explicit‐like Predictive Sequence Learning Task ( PSLT ). RT ‐…

  • Revisiting Holistic Interventions in Substance Abuse Treatment

Christson Adedoyin, Nalalia Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 28

Holism is regarded as an effective means of alternative treatment, and there has been an increase in the number of innovative holistic treatment interventions in diverse fields of practice. Holistic practices in substance abuse treatment programs encompass therapies such as expressive therapy, art therapy, spiritual, or religious interventions; osteopathic treatment; acupuncture; and more. Although there is limited research on the effectiveness a…

  • Developing Auditory Measures of General Speediness: A Pilot Study

    Open Access•Ian Zajac, Ian T Zajac et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2011

This study examined whether the broad ability general speediness (Gs) could be measured via the auditory modality. Existing and purpose-developed auditory tasks that maintained the cognitive requirements of established visually presented Gs markers were completed by 96 university undergraduates. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that the auditory tasks combined with established visual measures to define latent Gs and reaction ti…

  • Perceptual Learning on Inspection Time and Motion Perception

Nalalia Burns, Nicholas R Burns et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Perceptual learning on simple perceptual tasks is interpreted as plasticity of neuronal populations in the sensory cortex (M. Fahle & T. Poggio, 2002). The authors examined individual differences on perceptual learning for 2 tasks-inspection time (IT) and a motion direction discrimination task that was instantiated as random dot kinematograms. The authors' main questions were whether individual differences in perceptual learning were consistent a…
