This article examines the everyday labour of handcart and bicycle workers in Accra and Tema, showing how their activities constitute a form of relational infrastructure in the urban economy of Ghana's Greater Accra Region. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork based on interviews, direct observation and photographic documentation, the study highlights how workers improvise repairs, adjust routes to shifting rhythms of demand and rely on dense networks…

From a Greentech Special Economic Zone to Small Zinc‐Walled Markets
This article examines the relations between the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and the urban economy of Atlantis, South Africa, with particular attention to the Witsand neighbourhood. Drawing on Milton Santos' theory of the two circuits of the urban economy, the study explores how the upper circuit of greentech industries within the ASEZ interacts with the lower circuit of less capitalised commercial and service activities in Witsand. Meth…
Industrialização e Zonas Econômicas Especiais (Zees) nas formações socioespaciais africanas
Paisagens derivadas
Forgotten territories
Considering the uneven geography of foreign direct investment in Africa, this article examines political, demographic and infrastructural factors that have led six countries – Burundi, Central African Republic, Comoros, the Gambia, Guinea Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe – to be the least attractive territories to the external capital. This paper investigates the extent to which political stability, qualification of labor, potential consumer mark…
Unequal geographies of urban mining
E-waste generation has been increasing on a global scale in the past decades, reaching the unprecedented figure of 53.6 million tons (Mt) in 2019 and raising concerns and debates around the risks, challenges and opportunities related to its management. Collecting and recycling this type of waste - activities that are encompassed in the term 'urban mining' - should happen under proper environmental and social conditions, to ensure that reverse log…
Buy Today, Pay Tomorrow
Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, expansion of the formal credit supply in Brazil has promoted the 'financial inclusion' of the low-income population, especially through instalment plans offered by large retail chains. This article aims to analyse the impacts of formal credit availability on the consumption of electrical and electronic goods by residents of Jardim Helena, a neighbourhood in São Paulo's periphery. Through the collec…
Alignments between e‐waste legislation and the Sustainable Development Goals
The first two decades of the 21st century had a significant increase in e‐waste generation. While improper recycling technologies applied to this type of waste pose severe risks to the environment and human health, several e‐waste management legislation has been recently enforced worldwide, reaching 78 countries and covering 71% of the global population. In common, most of them aim to recycle minerals and plastic from the disposed waste of electr…
Vulnerabilidade e a construção social do risco
