  • LGM erosion and subsequent rapid loess deposition in Trzebnica (SW Poland)

Open Access•Agnieszka Szymak, Zdzisław Jary et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

The 7.7-m loess–paleosol sequence in Trzebnica records a short (ca. 3 ka) but intense phase of loess accumulation that preceded the onset of the Weichselian Late Glacial (MIS 2). The stratigraphy contains a well-defined erosional unconformity, marking a hiatus prior to the deposition of the youngest loess unit (L1LL1). The Trzebnica loess contains numerous signals of slope redeposition, as evidenced by lithological indicators. In this paper, we p…

  • Understanding the technological behaviour of humans in caves of the north part of central Europe in the early Middle Palaeolithic. A new perspective on the Biśnik Cave, Poland

  • New data on the morphological traits of neanderthal teeth from the Stajnia Cave (Poland)

Open Access•W Nowaczewska, Gregorio Oxilia et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Neanderthal fossils are rare, and in Poland they have been found at only two sites: Ciemna Cave and Stajnia Cave. At Stajnia Cave, nine Neanderthal teeth associated with Micoquian artefacts and dated to ~120,000–92,500 years ago were discovered. Although their morphology and taxonomic status have been confirmed, the internal morphological variation of Neanderthal teeth remains poorly understood. Objective: The main aim of our study is…

  • Application of Multi‐Method Dating for Understanding the Gravettian North of Moravia, Central Europe

    Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, P Bujalska et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•Referencias: 39

This article presents the results of integrating three methods to assess the age of the Upper Palaeolithic site of Pietraszyn 11 (SW Poland), close to the Moravian Gate. Sediment chronology determined using optically stimulated luminescence produced promising, yet ambiguous results (51.0 ± 3.7 to 20.3 ± 0.7 ka). Molecular dating of rodent remains provided a more exact date (32–22.5 ka cal bp ). Radiocarbon dating, however, allowed us to narrow th…

  • Optional and inconvenient additions

    Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, Adam Kobyłka et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2025•Referencias: 24

The rounded retouched tools that have been singled out in the Micoquian assemblages (‘Keilmessergruppe’)have long been an enigma. Even though their presence was recognised as early as the early 20th century, they received their formal name, the so-called ‘groszaki’, much later. More recently, similar tools have been recorded at the open-air site Pietraszyn 49a, SW Poland. These examples are slightly larger than average. They were made from flakes…

  • Late Middle Palaeolithic and Early Upper Palaeolithic in Poland in the light of new numerical dating

Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, Dariusz Bobak et al.•ARTICLE•Geographia Polonica•2024

Although the first numerical dating of Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites in Poland was applied at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century, it has only been in the last two decades that a data increase has been recorded, making it possible to discuss both the development of human behaviour and cultural phenomena in time perspective. This paper aims to show the chronological diversity of sites dating from the beginning of the Weichse…

  • A Middle Palaeolithic incised bear bone from the Dziadowa Skała Cave, Poland

Open Access•Tomasz Płonka, Andrzej Wiśniewski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 60

A fragment of an ursid radius with seventeen incisions (one of them incomplete) was excavated in the 1950s in the Dziadowa Skała Cave in the Częstochowa Upland in southern Poland from a deposit with faunal remains from the Eemian (ca 130–115 kyr). This object has been cited as the earliest evidence of Neanderthal cognitive abilities in the region, but it has been never studied in detail. The artefact has now been re-examined using microscopy and …

  • In search of a better method to distinguish artefacts from geofacts

Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, Milena Różycka et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 38

Archaeologists use a method of evaluating the characteristics of flakes, called scoring, to distinguish geofacts (pseudo‐artefacts or eoliths) from artefacts. Lower total scores are considered indicative of a natural source of the finds, while higher ones support the opposite. However, this method has some limitations. The most important are the small quantity of assemblages subject to such an analysis and the unclear boundary drawn by a ranking …

  • The Late and Final Middle Palaeolithic of Central Europe and Its Contributions to the Formation of the Regional Upper Palaeolithic

Open Access•Olaf Jöris, P Neruda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2022

For decades, the relationship of pre-modern hominins to anatomically modern humans (AMH) and the transition from mode 3 to mode 4 industries remain topics of ongoing scientific debate. Over the last 20 years, different disciplines have added new data and much detail to these questions, highlighting the demographic and social and cultural complexity underlaying these major changes or turnovers in human evolution. As with most other regions outside…

  • Silicite („flint”) from Opole-Groszowice

    Open Access•Antonín Přichystal, Jan-Michal Burdukiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2022•Citada por: 1

Until recently it was thought that all the erratic flints found at the Stone Age sites in the upper part of the Odra Valley were considered as silicites from the Baltic Sea. Their age of Baltic flints is associated with the Cretaceous, more precisely with the Maastrichtian or Palaeogene. However, it turns out that among these rocks, there are also silicites that are of different age and origin. They were first found in outcrops of sands and grave…

  • Bovid Bone Accumulation in Late Middle Palaeolithic Poland

    Andrzej Wiśniewski, J Wilczyński et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 50

The hunting activities of Neanderthals inhabiting the European Lowlands during the Weichsel glaciation are poorly understood due to the scarcity of faunal remains. This work concerns the puzzling accumulation of mammalian remains at the Middle Palaeolithic site Haller Av. in Wrocław, southwestern Poland. The site yielded lithic artifacts in two levels and numerous bone remains typical for steppe-tundra fauna, dominated by steppe bison (Bison pris…

    Open Access•Andrzej Wiśniewski, Wojciech Jarosz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2018•Referencias: 11

Few studies have been published in Poland concerning body dimensions of firefighters from the State Fire Service although this knowledge is needed for e.g. development of personal protective equipment. The aim of the study was to evaluate body dimensions and weight-to-height ratio in firefighters from the State Fire Service. Using the anthropological procedures, body mass (BM) and body height (BH) were examined in 178 men at the chronological age…

In this paper we concentrate upon connections between inquisitiveness, being the core concept of INQ, and question raising, characterized in IEL by means of the concepts of question evocation and erotetic implication. We consider the basic system InqB of INQ, remain at the propositional level and show, inter alia, …
