Khayyat, Munira. 2022. A Landscape of War: Ecologies of Resistance and Survival in South Lebanon. Oakland: University of California Press

  • War, from the South

    Munira Khayyat•ARTICLE•Public Culture•2023•References: 36

Dawn bursts over the hills of South Lebanon bathing the landscape in a soft pink glow.1 I was up before the first light with the women of the household to harvest this morning's picking of the tobacco harvest, in season for the duration of the humid summer. As the rays of the sun reach us bent over in the fields, we straighten up, sweeping black sap-coated fingers over our brows. Shouldering the burlap sacks of fresh green leaves, we head back ho…

  • Resistant ecologies: The life of war in South Lebanon

    Open Access•Munira Khayyat•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 54

In South Lebanon, war is lived as landscape, environment, milieu. Those pursuing life in such quarters do what they can to make-live, and their lifelines are often as vitalizing as they are deadly: tobacco farmers ally themselves with what they call a "bitter crop" that flourishes in an arid war zone, while pastoralists walk in explosive fields with their mine-evading goats. These multispecies alliances flourish because they can survive the deadl…

  • A Landscape of War: Ecologies of Resistance and Survival in South Lebanon

    Open Access•Munira Khayyat•BOOK•Landscape of War•2022

What worlds take root in war? In this book, anthropologist Munira Khayyat describes life along the southern border of Lebanon, where resistant ecologies thrive amid a terrain of perennial war. A Landscape of War takes us to frontline villages where armed invasions, indiscriminate bombings, and scattered land mines have become the environment where everyday life is waged. This book dwells with multispecies partnerships such as tobacco farming and …

Rola Khayyat, Munira Khayyat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Middle East Women s…•2018

The cover photograph of two generations is part of Fahmi Basrawi’s extensive personal archive. This classic sepia-toned family portrait of people pressed together in a living room evokes the domestic intimacy of an upper-middle-class abode in Medina on January 24, 1937, five years after the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It portrays a family world that preexisted such national entities and a lifeworld bound to others before the cultural…

  • Pieces of Us

Munira Khayyat, Yasmine Khayyat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Middle East Women s…•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This article uses a multigenerational lens to address the tangible and intangible embodiments of the US-Saudi oil empire in the lives of the three sister authors. This multisited intimate geography of empire challenges national categories and recognizes that mixing and migrations, forced or desired, shape and define all families. It explores the look, feel, and sounds of lifeworlds in the US imperial outpost of Aramco using an immense archive of …

  • Battlefield Pastoral

    Munira Khayyat•ARTICLE•Third Text•2012

On the southern border of Lebanon, on the edge of the nation state, tobacco is the crop which tells the cycles of nature and war. Cultivated in an area where pastoral nomads once moved freely, the brief life and flexible storage of tobacco are temporally and spatially attuned to the spatio-temporal parameters of the warscape. Premised on poverty and acclimatised to war, this ‘bitter weed’ is the sprout of war-in-time success
