The Dialogues of Plato, Volume 1
This initial volume in a series of new translations of Plato’s works includes a general introduction and interpretive comments for the dialogues translated: the Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Gorgias, and Menexenus. The Case for Support Services in Substance Abuse Treatment
Comprehensive services, including employment/vocational interventions, family therapy, medical care, and case management, have been shown by the literature to be critical elements of programs that provide effective treatment for substance abusers. Despite clear research findings, clients are often unable to obtain needed adjunctive services at their clinics. When services are not provided on site, clients typically are not effectively placed for …
Vocational rehabilitation of drug abusers
Employment has been identified as an important element in the rehabilitation of drug abusers and, together with abstinence from illicit drugs and criminal involvement, is frequently used as a criterion of treatment outcome. The research literature for the last 20 years on variables affecting employment and the vocational rehabilitation of drug abusers is reviewed with an emphasis on (a) the identification of variables influencing the employment o…

Self-Esteem and Internal-External Control
A recent conceptualization of self-esteem defines it within a self-other context in an attempt to take social factors into account (Ziller, Hagey, Smith, & Long, 1969). One of the assumptions that Ziller, et al. make about their self-esteem measure is that Ss who have high self-esteem will have a higher potential for self-reinforcement. From this, one can infer that high scorers on the Ziller, ei al. self-esteem measure should score low on Roaer'…
Authoritarianism, Creativity, and other Correlates of the Famous Sayings Test
The four subscales of Bass's Famous Sayings test were compared with brief measures of authoritarianism, creativity, extraversion, response acquiescence, and moral judgments in mitigating circumstances. Intercorrelations among the subscales of Bass's test were similar to those obtained by Vidulich and Bass (1960), while correlations with the other personality tests showed several significant relationships consistent with expectations. In this samp…

Creativity, Intelligence, and Achievement
Two tests of creativity (complexity-simplicity preferences, and a true-false personality questionnaire), one test of intelligence (Stanford-Binet IQ) and one achievement test (Stanford Achievement Test, Advanced Battery Partial: KM-3) were administered to 62 high school students. Six 2 × 2 analyses of variance were computed for each achievement subtest, with high and low creativity and high and low IQ as independent variables. It was found that I…

Social Facilitation of Eating Behavior in Armadillos
The fact that organisms eat more in the presence of other members of the same species than when alone has been well documented in a wide variety of species (James, 1960). In only one study (Platt, Sutker, & James, 1967), utilizing opossums, has this effect not been demonstrated, and these results could be accounted for as a function of the amount of early social stimulation. The current study reports an attempt to demonstrate social facilitation …
