    Open Access•Rodney P Joseph, Keenan A Pituch et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: The first COVID-19 case in the US was diagnosed late January 2020. In the subsequent months, cases grew exponentially. By March 2020, SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19) was a global pandemic and the US declared a national emergency. To mitigate transmission, federal guidelines were established for social and physical distancing. These events disrupted daily routines of individuals around the world, including Ameri…

  • Correlates of dementia-related anxiety

    Stacy Yun, Molly Maxfield•ARTICLE•Educational Gerontology•2020

As public awareness of and exposure to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) have increased worldwide, the fear of developing ADRD, or dementia-related anxiety (DRA), is expected to increase as well. It was hypothesized that at least part of what makes dementia so anxiety-provoking is the association of ADRD with older adults, an often stigmatized group. To test this hypothesis, two online studies examined how ageist beliefs contribute…

  • Mortality Salience and Age Effects on Charitable Donations

    Open Access•Jennifer R Roberts, Molly Maxfield•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 35

Research suggests that people are typically more generous in later life. Terror management theory offers one explanation for this pattern. The theory suggests that humans' innate desire to survive results in strong reactions to increased awareness of mortality, thereby affecting behaviors. Older adults' increasing proximity to life's end has been associated with greater generative concern, as a means of caring for future generations and ensuring …

Findings provide neurophysiological support for the shift in older adults' responses to death-related stimuli found in other TMT research as well as studies reporting reduced explicit death anxiety in older adults. Results also highlight the importance of considering stimuli content in studies of attention and emotion

  • A terror management perspective on the role of death-related anxiety in psychological dysfunction

Molly Maxfield, Samantha John et al.•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2014

Building on previous existential theorizing, terror management theory provides a unique approach to conceptualizing the development, maintenance, and impact of psychological disorders. The theory suggests that awareness of mortality creates the potential for anxiety, which is managed by an anxiety-buffering system consisting of one's cultural worldview, self-esteem, and interpersonal attachments. The pursuit of meaning, personal value, and interp…

However, limited research has addressed how individuals holding beliefs inconsistent with the dominan…
