Labor organizing efforts grew following the COVID-19 pandemic in American higher education institutions. • The Effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Educational Attainment

Open Access•Douglas N Harris, Feng Chen et al.•ARTICLE•RSF The Russell Sage Foundation…•2024•Cited by: 1

We study the effects of the COVID pandemic on educational attainment. By 2022, entry into two-year colleges was 21 percent lower than before the pandemic, with larger declines in Black- and Hispanic-majority colleges. Four-year college entry declined by only 6 percent and then rebounded 4 percent. High school graduation reached an all-time high in 2022. To explain these patterns, we undertook an interrupted time series design. Lower numbers of CO…

Leveraging data for 2,458 colleges and universities, we examined how political, epidemiological, economic, and institutional characteristics correlated with Fall 2020 reopening plans. We found no discernible relationship…

    Open Access•Christopher R Marsicano, Christopher Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Congressional lobbying by education-related interest groups is an understudied subject in education research. This brief uses congressional lobbying expenditure data from 1998 to 2017 to examine trends in lobbying behavior by labor unions; K–12 education providers; and public, private nonprofit, and for-profit higher education institutions. Education interest groups have spent in excess of $2 billion lobbying Congress since 1998. Higher education…

  • Cracks in the Bedrock of American Democracy: Differences in Civic Engagement Across Institutions of Higher Education

    Open Access•Brent J Evans, Christopher R Marsicano et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 46

Preparing educated and active citizens is one of the primary goals of higher education, yet colleges and universities may neglect civic engagement due to the prioritization of labor market preparation. Drawing on neoinstitutional theory, this paper examines the missions, infrastructure, activities, and outcomes related to civic engagement across postsecondary institutional characteristics. By combining several data sources on a diverse set of ins…
