  • Diversity in Civic Engagement: Political Priorities and Protest Behavior of Arizona College Students

    Open Access•Lauren Kater, Nathan D Martins et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 34

A core function of higher education is to prepare students to be active and informed citizens who are prepared to make sustained contributions to civic life and democratic society. However, past research on college student civic engagement has disproportionately focused on students at traditional 4-year universities and on a narrow range of political activities. In this study, we analyzed online survey data ( N = 1,159) collected before the 2020 …

This study investigates neighborhood factors influencing social trust among Arizona young adults during the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election. Through an analysis of online survey data for a sample of young adults ( N = 1,376) who participated in the Arizona Youth Identity Project, we explore how neighbo…

  • Youth Views on Race

    Open Access•Brett S Goldberg, Nathan D Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Contexts•2022

In this article, we consider how youth ages 14 to 24 years from diverse backgrounds understand and experience race. Through an analysis of open-ended survey questions collected as part of the national MyVoice Project, we explore youths’ views on the role race plays in their own lives and contemporary society more broadly. Our results highlight clear patterns by race/ethnicity linked to commonly held racial stereotypes that affect youth in distinc…

  • Unpacking High-Impact Practices in the Arts: Predictors of College, Career, and Community Engagement Outcomes

Angie L Miller, Nathan D Martins et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Arts Management…•2022

Research on high-impact practices (HIPs) demonstrates positive links to student learning and development, but generally does not focus on discipline-specific activities, such as working with an artist in the community and portfolio completion. This study seeks to identify beneficial HIPs for arts training through an analysis of 23,916 arts alumni from 77 postsecondary institutions. A series of regression models suggest that HIP participation was …

  • Lost in Transition: College Resources and the Unequal Early-Career Trajectories of Arts Alumni

    Open Access•Nathan D Martins, Nathan D Martin et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 78

This article considers how college resources (academic abilities, social engagement, and career skills) affect the likelihood of a successful post-graduation job search. Using survey data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project ( N = 16,659 alumni who graduated between 1976 and 2015), we find that arts graduates are increasingly likely to be lost in transition. Over recent decades, the likelihood of experiencing a prolonged job search aft…

  • Managers in the Global Economy: A Multilevel Analysis

    Open Access•Yunus Kaya, Nathan D Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2016

We examine individual- and country-level determinants of managerial employment, using data from the 1989 to 2009 waves of the World Values and European Values Surveys (n = 89,336 employed adults in 59 countries). Reflecting the rise of the transnational capitalist class, we find that factors related to globalization and international political institutions are most strongly associated with opportunities to join the managerial class relative to fa…

  • Workers of the Less Developed World Unite? A Multilevel Analysis of Unionization in Less Developed Countries

    Open Access•Nathan D Martins, Nathan D Martin et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2007•Cited by: 23•References: 65

Past scholars of unionization have offered exemplary cross-national studies of affluent democracies and case studies of less developed countries (LDCs). What has been lacking is cross-national research on unionization across LDCs. We conduct a multilevel analysis of the likelihood that a worker is unionized with the late-1990s World Values surveys of 39 LDCs. We propose that unionization in LDCs can be explained by the individual characteristics …
