A systematic review of relationship sacrifices from 2002 to 2021: Moving toward inclusivity
We conducted a systematic review of research on relational sacrifices in romantic relationships from 2002 to 2021 [ N = 115 studies] to answer three questions: Q1: Whose voices and vantage points are represented in the research?; Q2: What types of questions are valued?; Q3: What are the reflections and connections about relational sacrifices that were learned during the review? To address Q1, we coded sample demographics of study participants on …
Recognizing the blurred boundary between health‐related support and control in close relationships
In this review, we analyze the blurred boundary – or conceptual convergence – between health‐related social support and social control in close relationships. We begin with a brief overview of research on social support, defined as the provision of assistance or influence to help a close other achieve a health‐related goal or cope with illness related stressors, and social control, refers to communication intended to evoke health behavior change …
The role of close others in promoting weight management and body image outcomes: An application of confirmation, self-determination, social control, and social support
Four theoretical perspectives grounded this examination of mothers', romantic partners', and friends' interpersonal communication behaviors related to young women's weight management behaviors and body image outcomes. Specifically, behaviors identified by confirmation (i.e., acceptance and challenge), self-determination (i.e., autonomous and controlled motivation), social control (i.e., positive and negative social control), and social support (i…
Interpersonal effects of health-related social control: Positive and negative influence, partner health transformations, and relationship quality
It is common for romantic partners to influence one another's health maintenance behaviors. Previous research has examined positively and negatively framed social control messages to understand health behavior outcomes and relational affect; however, this study confirms and extends previous research by studying the associations between health transformations (from interdependence theory, health behaviors enacted for the partner) and relationship …
Relational Sacrifices about Intimate Behavior and Relationship Quality for Expectant Cohabitors
Using interdependence theory, we examined how relational sacrifices specific to intimacy were associated with positive (commitment, satisfaction, love, and maintenance) and negative (ambivalence and conflict) relationship quality among expectant, unmarried cohabitors (n = 69 individuals), because this group may struggle relationally. We examined how often individuals made sacrifices for their partners and their partners’ perceived awareness of th…
A daily diary study: Working to change the relationship and relational uncertainty in understanding positive relationship quality
We collected daily diary data from 165 couples ( N = 330) in romantic relationships to examine how working to change the relationship and relational uncertainty influence positive relationship quality (i.e., closeness, satisfaction, and commitment). We used concepts from the investment model and literature on relationship maintenance and relational uncertainty. As hypothesized, we found a positive association between working to change the relatio…
"You're going to eat that?" Relationship processes and conflict among mixed-weight couples
This study examines conflict among heterosexual mixed-weight (i.e., one overweight and one healthy weight partner) and matched-weight couples ( N = 43 couples). Participant sex, eating together, partner health support, and negative partner influence were examined as moderators of the association between weight status and conflict. Using dyadic models, we found that mixed-weight couples, specifically couples including overweight women and healthy …
Sexual Transformations and Intimate Behaviors in Romantic Relationships
To understand the association between sexual transformations (i.e., changes in sexual behavior for the partner), intimate behaviors, and relationship quality among couples in romantic relationships, this study used Actor Partner Interdependence Models to examine frequency of sexual transformations, feelings about sexual transformations, and intimate behaviors as predictors of relationship satisfaction among 96 couples (N = 192). Sexual transforma…

Revealing parenthoods: Some observations on theoretical, lay and professional experiences of parenting in contemporary society
This paper explores literature on parenting and parenthood to reveal emerging patterns of parenthoods that contest the notion of a single, universal, unchanging archetype. An extensive literature review confirms that in contemporary society diverse understandings, meanings and experiences of parenthood abound, dependent on perspective, be it professional, theoretical, cultural or personal. Academic, theoretical and professional understandings of …
Longitudinal Aspects of Reconviction: Secure and Open Intervention with Juvenile Offenders in Northern Ireland
This study examines baseline and comparative serious offending among a large sample of 592 male juvenile offenders sentenced to secure and open forms of residential custody in Northern Ireland training schools. Analysis of baseline offending reveals no significant difference in prior seriousness of offending between juvenile offenders placed in secure custody compared to open residential custody. Trend analyses of subsequent reconviction show tha…
