The Cultural Divide
This article investigates the function of book reading in a society consisting of a multiplicity of ethno-cultural communities, asking whether book reading functions as a unifying factor within each ethno-cultural community or as a dividing factor and as a signifier of boundaries between them. It is based on multiyear survey data among representative samples of Israeli urban adults (1970, 1990, 2001-2002, 2007, and 2011), focus groups, and analys…
Conceptualizing E-leisure
The emergence and diffusion of new information and communication technologies have profoundly affected and are still transforming individuals’ leisure. These technologies offer many enjoyable activities often described as “online leisure”, “cyber leisure” or “E-leisure”. Although numerous studies have examined such activities, only few scholars have related to the essence of E-leisure. Based on the principal components of leisure studies and new …
The Never-Ending Story
This article examines the idiosyncratic development of Israel's communication field against the backdrop of the field's main structural dilemmas: (a) emphasis on research orientation versus on professional journalistic training and (b) firm boundaries for the field based on its mother disciplines (humanities or social sciences) versus open boundaries adopting different disciplines' research topics/methods that touch on communication phenomena. Th…
Leisure-styles and life satisfaction among recent retirees in Israel
This article examines the leisure behaviour, attitudes and life satisfaction of a sample of 383 retirees aged 50 or more years in an Israeli national survey. Multivariate analyses identified four leisure-styles on the basis of the type of leisure activity engaged in, its relative sophistication, whether it was a formally-organised cultural activity, and its location (at home or outdoors). The four styles were: ‘company seekers’, ‘media consumers’…
The Red, the White and the Blue
The two waves of immigration to Israel from the former Soviet Union, in the 1970s and the 1990s, have created the largest (over one million people) and most distinct cultural and linguistic ethnic community. Russian-speaking immigrants soon developed their own cultural institutions and attained significant political power. Rising communication needs led to the swift development of Russian media, including radio, television and over one hundred ne…
The consumers choice
This study focuses on two large minorities in Israeli society: the 'returning Diaspora' of Russian immigrants and the 'involuntary' Arab minority. Using survey data, this paper examines the relationship between the use of Hebrew, Russian and/or Arabic media, and the strength of two identities that members of a minority group possess; i. e., the one shared with the Israeli majority and the one based on one's respective minority. Based on the use o…
The Social Implications of Cable Television
The present study deals with the social implications of cable broadcasting and explores the possible links between the spread of global media and the development of individualistic and globalistic orientations. The study examined the function of television in strengthening individuals' cognitive and affective connections with their own selves, with social groups such as primary and ethnic groups, with their society (the nation-state), and with th…
Literacy and Reading in a Multimedia Environment
This study explores changes in reading behavior in Israel over 20 years between 1970 and 1990. The comparison of two periods reveals a slight increase in newspaper reading and a slight decrease in book and magazine reading, although the majority of the population uses all the available print media. Active reading (at least one book per month) correlates strongly with various cultural activities such as theater, concerts, museums and lectures, tra…

Media and the Social Construction of Reality
A theoretical framework common to studies of the role of the mass media in the process of the social construction of reality from both European and American communication research traditions is developed in this article. The framework is derived from the theories of Schutz (1967) and Berger and Luckmann (1967) on the process of reality construction. A model composed of two dimensions—type of reality and distance of social elements from direct exp…
