The &s;field&s; of study in the empirical investigation of fan audiences is commonly defined as a given fan culture. On the Couch with Europe
This study explores the role of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in creating and shaping European identity and belonging through an analysis of the affective bond television audiences have built with the largest and longest running pan-European media event. In reference to the ESC as an object of retained childhood media consumption, this bond is analyzed drawing on the notion of transitional objects in the work of object-relations theorist D.W.…
Public Sphere and Publicness
Debates among political communication scholars and audiences of spectator sport often share a surprising consensus: while the first group has lamented the popularization and thus trivialisation of politics in which sport has played an important role, the latter has objected to the politicisation of sport. In this chapter I will explore the role the consumption of media sport plays in the contemporary public sphere and assess its consequences for …
All Change” at Popular Communication
One-Dimensional Fan
Drawing on Marcuse's analysis of one-dimensional society, this article investigates the relationship between text and fan in its cultural micro and macro framing. The article explores the semiotic conditions through which texts function as objects of fandom and juxtaposes the reflective reading of fan texts based on their immediate concretization and normalization with the reflexive engagement demanded by the textual "blanks" in literary texts Is…
