This article proposes that the formalization of common schooling in the American states derives from the sequence of institutional formation beginning with the state asylum, moving to the reformatory, and then moving to compulsory attendance. The analysis of this sequence broadens the conception of American education and demonstrates that it is composed of three worlds: the common, the delinquent, and the special. This article presents an explanation for the process of feminization of public school teaching in the United States between 1870 and 1920. Feminization of teaching is seen as generated by economic constraints increased by the formal definition of state school systems through enactment of compulsory attendance laws. The perceived social status of husbands and wives in dual-work families as a function of achieved and derived occupational status
Social Change, Parental Values, and the Salience of Sex Education
Presents an explanation for the salience of sex education as symbolic of long term trends which have led to a contraction of family authority relative to schooling and which have remade the basis of urban education. These historical changes have isolated some groups who experience these trends as intrusions into traditional family authority. Proposed correlates of stance on sex education are tested in an empirical analysis using National Opinion …

This paper investigates the relationship between sex status, community referral sources, and determination of voluntary or involuntary disposition. The relationship between sex status and involuntary disposition is made primarily through significant differences in community living arrangements associated with different referral sources. This paper presents an explanation for the variation in date of enactment of compulsory school attendance legislation. Enactment of compulsory schooling is interpreted in terms of resources committed by states to sustain public schooling for all. Using data drawn from the 1870 Census on populations and occupations, the paper analyzes specific conditions favorable to the commitment of such resources. Implicit in much theoretical literature on marital relations in dual-career families is the hypothesis that marital stress and dissatisfaction would be attendant if working wives were to be higher in occupational prestige than their husbands.
