    Open Access•M Moody-Ramirez, Carolyn M Byerly et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism & Mass Communication…•2023

The Journal and Mass Communication Quarterly (JMCQ) has documented the struggle members of marginalized groups face in their quest to be treated equally in media content and careers. In this analysis, we note that the journal’s century of articles documents the many historical shifts in the representation and treatment of women and minorities in media settings. Articles emphasize the lack of opportunities for advancement, management issues, and s…

  • The Ties that Still Bind

    Silvio Waisbord, Silvio R Waisbord•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 6

This paper explores the interaction of the global and the national, beginning with an analysis of the decrease in attention to the impact of global media on Latin American cultures in contemporary political and academic debates. It attributes this decrease to the convergence of three developments: the failure of past experiences with state ownership and control of mass media, optimism about the state of audiovisual industries and cultures, and th…

  • Investigative journalism and political accountability in South American democracies

    Silvio Waisbord, Silvio R Waisbord•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Mass…•1996•Cited by: 9•References: 12

A number of recent cases of investigative journalism in the South American news media might lead to a conclusion that U.S‐style professional norms are beginning to characterize that region's press. The present research argues, rather, that there is as yet no consensus among journalists about the ideals that should govern them: South American journalism straddles ambiguous traditions and continues to be mired in cultural contradictions and the pol…

  • Leviathan dreams

    Silvio Waisbord, Silvio R Waisbord•ARTICLE•The Communication Review•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 5

This article examines different forms of state intervention in the history of broadcasting in South America. In contrast to “media imperialism”; positions, it is argued that the analysis of the evolution of broadcasting systems cannot be restricted to the role of international capital. Nor can the development of broadcasting in the region be understood as completely dominated by market mechanisms. On different occasions and for different reasons,…

  • Television and Election Campaigns in Contemporary Argentina

    Open Access•Silvio Waisbord, Silvio R Waisbord•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•1994

This article discusses the coming of television to Argentine electoral politics during the last decade. It reviews how political parties and candidates have used television for campaigning. A dynamic and rapidly changing polity chiefly accounts for the fact that television has become a central forum for politicians to go public. The difficulties faced by parties in establishing solid communication channels, the breakdown of partisan identities, a…

  • Knocking on Newsroom Doors

    Silvio Waisbord, Silvio R Waisbord•ARTICLE•Political Communication•1994•Cited by: 13•References: 6

This article examines the causes for the rise of political scandals in Argentina in the early 1990s. Available explanations fail to provide a satisfactory answer, mainly because they ignore the interplay of forces that produce media revelations of government wrongdoing. Argentine scandals cannot be reduced to arguments about official corruption but rather require a consideration of political and media developments. Media exposés in Argentina have…
