  • Training the Intelligent Eye: Understanding Illustrations in Early Modern Astronomy Texts

Kathleen Crowther, Kathleen M Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•Isis•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 31

Throughout the early modern period, the most widely read astronomical textbooks were Johannes de Sacrobosco's De sphaera and the Theorica planetarum, ultimately in the new form introduced by Georg Peurbach. This essay argues that the images in these texts were intended to develop an "intelligent eye." Students were trained to transform representations of specific heavenly phenomena into moving mental images of the structure of the cosmos. Only by…

    Peter Barker•BOOK•Revue d histoire des sciences•2008•Cited by: 2

Betty Jo Teeter Dobbs not only shifted the boundaries of Newton scholarship, she changed its center. Her first book The Foundations of Newton's Alchemy shifted the boundaries of inquiry by insisting on the importance of disciplines outside the canonical sciences in understanding the scientific tradition. In The Janus Faces of Genius she took the further step of arguing that religion, not science, was the real center of Newton's thought. Although …

  • Continuity Through Revolutions: A Frame-Based Account of Conceptual Change During Scientific Revolutions

    Open Access•Xiang Chen, Peter Barker•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2000•Cited by: 6•References: 8

In this paper we examine the pattern of conceptual change during scientific revolutions by using methods from cognitive psychology. We show that the changes characteristic of scientific revolutions, especially taxonomic changes, can occur in a continuous manner. Using the frame model of concept representation to capture structural relations within concepts and the direct links between concept and taxonomy, we develop an account of conceptual chan…

At the end of the sixteenth century astronomers and others felt compelled to choose among different cosmologies. For Tycho Brahe, who played a central role in these debates, the intersection of the spheres of Mars and the Sun was an outstanding problem that had to be resolved before he made his choice. His ultimate solution was to eliminate celestial spheres in favour of fluid heavens, a crucial step in the abandonment of the Ptolemaic system and…

quot; Kuhnians depict the history of any scientific discipline as a succession of incommensurable paradigms. Empirical work done in one paradigm is of little relevance to another, and comparisons of paradigms on such familiar grounds as experimental adequacy are said to be inconclusive. Different paradigms do not agree on what constitutes knowledge or the meaning of truth. The recent work of other philosophers of science, such as Lakatos and Laud…

This volume examines the influence that Epicureanism and Stoicism, two philosophies of nature and human nature articulated during classical times, exerted on the development of European thought to the Enlightenment. Although the influence of these philosophies has often been noted in certain areas, such as the influence of Stoicism on the development of Christian thought and the influence of Epicureanism on modern materialism, the chapters in thi…

  • Stoic contributions to early modern science

    Open Access•Peter Barker•CHAPTER•Atoms, Pneuma, and Tranquillity•1991

Although there are clear indications of Stoic influence in a variety of scientific contexts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Stoic contribution to early modern science has been almost completely ignored. The silence of modern historians of science is a striking contrast to writers in other fields – for example, politics and literature – where Stoic influences are widely acknowledged and accorded considerable importance. I will …
