  • The application of quartzite petrogenesis in Palaeolithic research

Open Access•Alejandro Prieto, Noora Taipale et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Archaeologically-oriented petrography has changed the way of conceiving economic and social practices during the Palaeolithic. Research on quartzite, the second most widely used lithic resource, has experienced a notable increase thanks to the formal definition of the material, methodological improvements, and case studies that are shedding light on the economy and social interactions during the Palaeolithic. This paper briefly presents the progr…

  • Spatial palaeoecology of large-herbivore hominin prey-species at Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, Lower Saxony, Germany

    Open Access•Phoebe Heddell-Stevens, Sarah Barakat et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024•References: 56

The application of high-resolution methods to reconstruct the ecology and behavior of large-herbivores within Late Pleistocene contexts in Europe has revealed increasing evidence for variability in diet, habitat preference, ranges and mobility patterns through time and space. This data has major implications for interpretations of hominin subsistence strategies in terms of prey-species selection, which rest to a large extent, on the spatial ecolo…

  • Reading Spoor

    Open Access•Tilman Lenssen-Erz, Andreas Pastoors•CHAPTER•Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks•2021

The spoor of animals and humans alike contain rich information about an individual and about a momentary activity this individual performed. If the – arguably hard-wired – human ability to read spoor and tracks is sufficiently trained, a footprint allows to glean from it various physical, kinetic, medical, social and psychologic data about an individual, as has been observed among various populations across the globe. The Ju|’hoansi San from nort…

  • Episodes of Magdalenian Hunter-Gatherers in the Upper Gallery of Tuc d’Audoubert (Ariège, France)

Open Access•Andreas Pastoors, Tilman Lenssen-Erz et al.•CHAPTER•Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks•2021

The Tuc d’Audoubert cave (Ariège, France) offers unique insights into the life of Late Pleistocene hunters-gatherers due to its exceptionally good preservation conditions. This is especially true for the 300 footprints in the upper gallery of the cave. Even for the layperson, some trackways are easily recognized. Short episodes of past life become tangible. The spectrum of scientific analytic methods used in western science has not yet provided a…

  • Cultural contact over the Strait of Gibraltar during the Middle Palaeolithic? Evaluating the visibility of cultural exchange

Open Access•Yvonne Tafelmaier, Andreas Pastoors et al.•ARTICLE•Munibe Antropologia-Arkeologia•2018

Possible contacts between hunter-gatherers of Northern Africa and Europe via the Strait of Gibraltar during the Pleistocene are still object to discussions. In the absence of significant fossil remains, debates are mainly based on similarities and differences of singular aspects of material culture. However, a theoretical framework for these discussions was lacking. The first aim of this study thus has been the development of a theoretical base. …

  • Site formation and chronology of the New Paleolithic Site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba, Southern Spain

Open Access•Martin Kehl, Christoph Burow et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The newly identified Paleolithic site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba hosts an almost seven-m-thick sediment profile investigated here to elucidate the rock shelter's chronostratigraphy and formation processes. At its base, the sediment sequence contains rich archeological deposits recording intensive occupation by Neanderthals. Luminescence provides a terminus ante quem of 39.4 ± 2.6 ka or 44.9 ± 4.1 ka (OSL) and 51.4 ± 8.4 ka (TL). This occupation …

    Open Access•Dirk Hoffmeister, Stefan Zellmann et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This contribution shows the application of terrestrial laser scanning in an integrative approach for the documentation and analyses of the Ardales Cave, southern Spain, which is in many respects an important geoarchaeological site. For the survey of the cave, a combination of the Riegl LMS Z420i laser scanner with a real‐time kinematic global positioning system (RTK‐GPS) from Topcon and further tachymetric measurements were used. The achieved thr…

  • Tracking in Caves

    Open Access•Andreas Pastoors, Tilman Lenssen-Erz et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2015•Cited by: 31•References: 6

Some of the painted caves in southern France preserve human footprints from the Ice Age of 17,000 years ago. Research has so far dealt with them sparsely and through a morphometric approach only. In 2013 three indigenous hunters/trackers from the Kalahari had an opportunity to read several spoor accumulations in four caves on the basis of their indigenous knowledge. As a result of this morpho-classificatory approach to track reading they produced…

  • New evidence for the Mousterian and Gravettian at Rio Secco Cave, Italy

    M Peresani, Matteo Romandini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 29•References: 8

The dearth of evidence for late Neanderthals in Europe reduces our ability to understand the demise of their species and the impact of the biological and cultural changes that resulted from the spread of anatomically modern humans. In this light, a recently investigated cave in the northern Adriatic region at the border between the Italian Alps and the Great Adriatic Plain provides useful data about the last Neanderthals between 46·0 and 42·1 ky …

  • Late Neanderthals at Jarama VI (central Iberia)?

Open Access•Martin Kehl, Christoph Burow et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Previous geochronological and archaeological studies on the rock shelter Jarama VI suggested a late survival of Neanderthals in central Iberia and the presence of lithic assemblages of Early Upper Paleolithic affinity. New data on granulometry, mineralogical composition, geochemical fingerprints and micromorphology of the sequence corroborate the previous notion that the archaeological units JVI.2.1 to JVI.2.3 are slackwater deposits of superfloo…

  • The Middle – Upper Palaeolithic Transition at Yabroud II (Syria). A Re-evaluation of the Lithic Material from the Rust Excavation

Andreas Pastoors, Gerd-Christian Weniger et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2008

The discussion about the Levantine transition from Middle to Upper Palaeolithic is still very intense. Different interpretations of the assemblage from Yabroud II (Syria) make this problem particularly apparent. This article presents the results of our reanalysis, which concentrated on the lithic artefacts from layers 10 to 5. Hence, the updated state of knowledge of Yabroud II allows a comparison to the sequence from Ksar Akil (Lebanon). Acting …
