Student Discourses of Community in an Intercultural Conflict and Community Course
This study is based on an undergraduate course on intercultural conflict and community building, which was grounded in critical intercultural communication pedagogy (CICP) and included a two-day, over-night, off-campus retreat. Three themes were critically analyzed and problematized in student retreat reflection paper discourse: celebrating difference and plurality, emphasizing similarity over differences, and building community: tools and tensio…
Revisiting Whiteness Pedagogy
Our study explores discourses of whiteness amongst a diverse group of undergraduate students within the context of critical intercultural communication pedagogy. Through a qualitative analysis of two sets of student essays, we look across discourses of students who primarily identify as white and students with nondominant identities to identify convergences and divergences. We found that many white-identifying students used strategic rhetorics to…
Critical Intercultural Mentoring and Allying
In this essay, we write about our collaborative experiences with faculty mentoring/allying relationships using autoethnography. From two different locations of academic faculty standing, we articulate that faculty mentoring/allying relationships can be sites of critical intercultural communication praxis in which differences informed by historical and existing power relations are productively discussed and acknowledged. However, these are easier …
Negotiating Contextually Contingent Agency
This study identifies an emergent framework for situated feminist peacebuilding based on interviews with representatives of community-based organizations in Kenya. We offer situated examples and firsthand accounts of how these women navigate different challenging spaces, wrestle with the relationships between macro-, meso-, and microcontextual factors, and negotiate agency- and systems-level change within patriarchal and politically changing cont…
Partnering for Anti-Poverty Praxis in Circles ® USA
The value of critical dialogic reflexivity is demonstrated through analysis of interview conversations between academic and practitioner partners in Circles® USA, a national nonprofit organization working to ameliorate poverty. The partnerships include the academic/practitioner author with six others: Circles founder and CEO, a lead trainer and codeveloper of training curriculum, and four individuals working to move out of poverty. The analysis f…
Intercultural communication competence
This essay reviews and extends calls for researchers and trainer/practitioners to clarify what is meant by culture, intercultural communication, and competence; ask critical questions about the validity and relevance of our work; and reconsider who benefits from research and training. Several limitations of previous research about intercultural competence are demonstrated, e.g., approaching culture as a nationally shared, homogenous, mental progr…
Culture, Communication, and Peacebuilding
This article argues that intercultural communication scholars should play a central role in advancing the study and practice of peacebuilding. A reflexive, multi-dimensional and contextualized framework for viewing peacebuilding is proposed, with a focus on personal, relational, and structural dimensions. Three topical areas—community engagement, intercultural dialogue, and alliance building—are used to illustrate the framework and point to possi…
Intercultural Identity Positioning
This study examines interview discourses from board members/volunteers, staff, and clients in two nonprofit organizations in the U.S. Southwest. Extending cultural identity theory constructs of avowal, ascription, and salience, the study used aspects of critical discourse analysis to thematically determine what the interview discourses revealed about identity positioning, negotiation of cross-status relationships and hierarchies, and how ideologi…
Contextual Negotiation of Cultural Identifications and Relationships
An integration of critical and interpretive perspectives frames the analysis of interview discourse from participants in a U.S. peace-building dialogue program during 1997–1998. Israeli, Palestinian, and Palestinian/Israeli identified participants’ discourse reveals that they negotiate multiple and contextually contingent cultural identifications, and that the context both enables and constrains their relationships with each other. Discursive the…
Negotiating Intercommunity and Community Group Identity Positions
This study applies a critical/interpretive framework to analyze discourses from two public documents compiled in 2002 from two intercommunity groups in West Belfast in Northern Ireland. Discourses are taken from participants’ comments, recounted experiences, and descriptions of their intercommunity relationships and actions produced to share with wider audiences in Northern Ireland. Analysis of selected discourse demonstrates: (a) how intercommun…
Cultural Ascriptions Displayed by Restraining Order Court Representatives
This qualitative study analyzes cultural ascriptions about women plaintiffs that emerged in interview responses from court representatives in the context of a Restraining Order courtroom in a Midwestern city. The judges, attorneys and court advocates' responses categorized women plaintiffs through individual and intersecting group ascriptions related to sex, race, ethnicity, and class. The cultural ascriptions displayed by court representatives i…
African American Communication
What communicative experiences are particular to African Americans? How do many African Americans define themselves culturally? How do they perceive intracultural and intercultural communication? These questions are answered in this second edition of African American Communication: Exploring Identity and Culture. Informing multiple audiences interested in African American culture, from cultural researchers and practitioners to educators, policyma…

Communication competence problematics in ethnic friendships
This study examines the relationship between ethnic background and emergent cultural competencies in friendships in the United States. A discursive, interpretive perspective served to delineate normative dimensions in competent intra‐and intercultural friendships involving Latinos, Asian Americans, African Americans, and Anglo Americans. The Undergraduate Major in Psychology
Stimulated by Clark's (2) report on distinguished psychologists and by Roe's (7) work with psychologists eminent in the experimental field, the writers decided to study a group of unselected undergraduate majors in psychology and to follow their subsequent careers. This paper reports preliminary findings at the end of the first year. All 37 undergraduates majoring in psychology at Louisiana State University (L.S.U.) in 1957-58 were asked to compl…
