  • The Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science

Emma M Seppälä, Emiliana Simon-Thomas et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Compassion…•2017

There are few things more moving than an act of compassion and few things more necessary than compassion in today’s world. Fortunately, the science of compassion has emerged as a robust field of study. The Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science is the first academic handbook on the science of compassion to date. It brings together well-established scholars and rising stars in the field—thereby bridging a wide variety of diverse perspectives, resea…

  • Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science

Emma M Seppälä, Stephanie L Brown et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Compassion…•2017

How do we define compassion? Is it an emotional state, a motivation, a dispositional trait, or a cultivated attitude? How does it compare to altruism and empathy? Chapters in this Handbook present critical scientific evidence about compassion in numerous conceptions. All of these approaches to thinking about compassion are valid and contribute importantly to understanding how we respond to others who are suffering. Covering multiple levels of our…

  • Understanding compassion capability

    Open Access•Jacoba M Lilius, Jacoba Lilius et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2011•Citada por: 34•Referências: 68

We elaborate a theory of the foundations of a collective capability for compassion through a detailed analysis of everyday practices in an organizational unit. Our induced theory of compassion capability draws on the findings of an interview study to illustrate and explain how a specific set of everyday practices creates two relational conditions — high quality connections and a norm of dynamic boundary permeability — that enable employees of a c…

  • The contours and consequences of compassion at work

    Open Access•Jacoba M Lilius, Jacoba Lilius et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2008•Citada por: 38•Referências: 14

This paper describes two studies that explore core questions about compassion at work. Findings from a pilot survey indicate that compassion occurs with relative frequency among a wide variety of individuals, suggesting a relationship between experienced compassion, positive emotion, and affective commitment. A complementary narrative study reveals a wide range of compassion triggers and illuminates ways that work colleagues respond to suffering.…

  • Compassion in Organizational Life

    Open Access•Jason M Kanov, Jason Kanov et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2004•Citada por: 37•Referências: 37

In this article, the authors explore compassion in work organizations. They discuss the prevalence and costs of pain in organizational life, and identify compassion as an important process that can occur in response to suffering. At the individual level, compassion takes place through three subprocesses: noticing another's pain, experiencing an emotional reaction to the pain, and acting in response to the pain. The authors build on this framework…

  • Individual emotion in work organizations

    Open Access•Anat Rafaeli, Monica Worline et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2001•Citada por: 5•Referências: 81

We are predisposed to thinking of emotions as our own, perhaps the most intimate parts of ourselves. Yet, more often than not, our emotions are inextricably bound up with other people and social worlds, with one of the most powerful of those being the organizational work context. The central premise of this article is that much of our social and emotional life is organizational. We begin with a view to the past, describing how, because of a focus…
