Some Theoretical Models and Constructs Generic to Substance Abuse Prevention Programs for Adolescents: Possible Relevance and Limitations for Problem Gambling
Global Positive Expectancies of the Self and Adolescents' Substance Use Avoidance: Testing a Social Influence Mediational Model
Grounded in theories of global positive expectancies and social influences of behavior, this investigation posited a model in which global positive expectancies are related to substance use as mediated by attitudes, subjective norms, self‐efficacy, and intentions. Using a cohort sample ( n = 525), structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypothesized predictions of future substance use. The findings suggest that, relative to adolesce…
A survey of injuries among Broadway performers
To obtain more information about injuries of Broadway performers, 313 performers appearing in 23 Broadway companies were surveyed. The percentage of performers injured was 55.5%, with a mean of 1.08 injuries performer. Lower extremity injuries were the most common. Sixty-two percent of performers believed that their injuries were preventable. As this study reports factors that significantly increase the risk of injury for dancers and actors, it m…
Large-Scale Environmental Risk Factors for Substance Use
This article discusses evidence on the importance of large-scale environmental risk factors for onset of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. It is suggested that smoking onset occurs through a process in which some individuals change from nonsmoking to susceptibility, experimentation, and adoption of regular use. A distinction is made between distal and proximal risk factors, and a model is outlined that encompasses both levels. We consider evi…

Teachers as Models in Programs for School Dental Health; An Evaluation of “The Toothkeeper”
An evaluation of the effectiveness of the Toothkeeper program was performed in Houston to determine if participation in the program by elementary school children would result in their having cleaner teeth and better gingival health than seen in similar children not in the program. Assessments for plaque and gingivitis were made at the beginning, at the completion of the formal 16-week program, and again after a second 16-week period. In this part…
Need for Approval as Related to the Effects of Persuasive Communications on Actual, Reported and Intended Behavior Change—A Viable Predictor
Need-for-approval scores were examined for possible relationships with various persuasive appeals, including one in which the social-approval content was predicted to have maximal effect on Ss high in need for approval. The study was conducted in the context of a large project in a natural setting ostensibly for the purpose of improving dental hygiene. Dependent measures included behavioral as well as reported responses in all experimental condit…

Fear arousal, persuasion, and actual versus implied behavioral change: New perspective utilizing a real-life dental hygiene program
In three junior high schools, students were exposed to high fear arousal, moderate fear arousal, positive affect arousal, elaborated recommendations only, and brief recommendations only directed at improving toothbrushing behavior. Criterion measures of information, anxiety, intention to behave, self-report of behavior, and a new chemical indicator of actual toothbrushing behavior were administered precommunication, immediately postcommunication,…
New Measure of Effects of Persuasive Communications: A Chemical Indicator of Toothbrushing Behavior
The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a behavioral measure of attitude change and examine its utility for large-scale field research efforts. Three groups were formed from 68 junior and senior high school students and each was presented with a different form (positive, fear, neutral) of a communication within the context of a public school system's ongoing dental hygiene program. Cleanliness of their teeth was measured by a chem…
Video Tape Recording in Social Psychological Research: An Illustrative Study in Pedodontia
The present paper examines the capability of the video tape recorder as a behavior-sampling instrument within the context of an investigation ostensibly designed to determine possibly positive or aversive effects of the absence or presence of mothers on children's behavior in a dental treatment situation. The behavior of 22 children was video tape-recorded as a dentist cleaned their teeth. The mothers of all children were present for one half and…
