The Phantom Menace
Drawing on extended ethnographic fieldwork in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (between 2001 and 2012), this article investigates how the intensifying regional insecurity is perceived and (re)acted upon by people inhabiting the frontier provinces of south-eastern Mauritania. It is argued that armed insurgencies and the emergence of nebulous assemblages such as the AQIM (Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb), must be analysed as constitu…
Spectres of Undocumented Migration in Paris
Based on recurrent ethnographic fieldwork with West African undocumented (im)migrants in Paris (France) since 2006, this photo-essay describes one particular housing complex inhabited by a vast West African diaspora. In addition to a descriptive analysis of my work with photography in the context of anthropological research in this particular setting, the article explores the notion of sacrifice as experienced and recounted by men who have undert…
Temporal Dialogues
This article explores the use of photographs and photographic methods in qualitative anthropological analysis. With a point of departure in the W. Baldwin Spencer and Francis J. Gillen collection of photographs, I discuss archive mining, photo repatriation, and collaborative photographic re-enactments of the original material during fieldwork in Central Australia. The combination of these methods through an interventionist approach generates a st…
Camera, Intervention and Cultural Critique
The key questions of the research project Camera as Cultural Critique, in which all contributors to this section of the issue participated, are outlined here. The overall purpose of the project was to explore how the use of audiovisual media in ethnographic research may contribute to sustained cultural critique. Grounding that critique in a certain understanding of the temporality of the present-as always in a state of emergence and involving ima…
Interventionistiske Skabeloner
Enacting immanent potentialities
The urban fringe areas of Nouakchott, the capital city of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, have become virtual epicentres of informal property speculation, as the state‐owned land that people illegally inhabit becomes an increasingly valuable commodity in the wake of urban redevelopment plans and vast infrastructural development projects. By applying ingenious ‘poaching’ strategies based on anticipation, the marginalized, impoverished people i…
Waterworlds
Icons of Becoming
Dramatic and spectacular images of destitute African migrants suffering in their attempts to reach European shores in ramshackle boats have become endemic in European media. However, these images rarely do more than produce the migrant as a political subject, a bare life from a destitute continent portrayed at the height of his suffering. Through ethnographic case material stemming from an ongoing research project documenting undocumented migrati…
