Pottery-forming practices in the Early Bronze Age Únětice culture of eastern Bohemia
Hidden in the clay. Unveiling the tradition of handmade pottery in Roman Thrace through an integrated analytical approach
Handmade pottery is among the most enduring yet least understood ceramic traditions of Roman Thrace. Long regarded as a simple household craft and primarily interpreted as a marker of local “Thracian” identity, it has rarely been examined as a dynamic cultural practice. To address this gap, this study adopts an integrated multidisciplinary approach to investigate handmade pottery from rural settlements along the Tundzha River in the Roman provinc…
Early Net Fishing at the Epipaleolithic Site of Jordan River Dureijat, Upper Jordan River, Israel
For more than 10,000 years (~ 20,000–10,000 BP), human groups repeatedly returned to the southern edge of Paleo-lake Hula in the Upper Jordan Valley to exploit aquatic resources at the Epipaleolithic site of Jordan River Dureijat (JRD). Previous research has emphasized line fishing based on bone fishhooks and line weights. Here, we document additional fishing methods revealed by the systematic use of limestone cobbles as net sinkers. The limeston…
Topographic analysis of ceramic vessel surfaces and variability in wall thickness as a means to identify pottery-forming methods
Technological and provenance insights into La Tène pottery
During the Late La Tène period in the first century BC, Central Europe witnessed significant shifts in settlement structures and material culture. Understanding these changes necessitates an examination of LT D1b phase settlements, particularly in Bohemia, where such sites are rare. This study extends beyond conventional stylistic analysis of pottery, incorporating material and manufacturing perspectives to reveal production organisation, distrib…
Hoard with a miner’s pick from Krtely in South Bohemia
This article presents a hoard of 27 metal artefacts and fragments of one ceramic vessel from the South Bohemian site of Krtely, dated to the earlier phase of the Late Bronze Age (Br D – Ha A1). Two exceptional phenomena are associated with the hoard. The first is its placement in a burial mound, and the second is the presence of two fragments of a broken miner's pick, analogous to those found in the salt mines of Hallstatt. In addition to typolog…

Introduction of the potter’s wheel as a reflection of social and economic changes during the La Tène period in Central Europe
This study focuses on the introduction of pottery-forming methods employing rotational motion in relation to social and economic conditions and their transformations during the La Tène period in Central Europe. It explores the diversity of technological practices on a broader geographical scale in several regions of the Czech Republic with various demographic, social, and environmental conditions during this period. The study is based on the idea…
Identifying the contribution of rotational movement in pottery forming based on statistical surface analysis
Discrimination of wheel-thrown pottery surface treatment by Deep Learning
Orientation Patterns Characteristic for the Structure of the Ceramic Body of Wheel-thrown Pottery
The described analysis follows recent findings related to the orientation of particles and voids in a ceramic body that is characteristic for wheel-made pottery. The analysis is focused on the potential variability within wheel-throwing method and is based on an experimental collection that combines the factors of the experience and motor habits of individual potters and the vessel shape. The orientation of the components of a ceramic body is cal…

V destrukci převažují komorové a nádobkové kachle běžné tvarové škály. Početně výrazně jsou zastoupeny i jiné kamnové konstrukční prvky, ponejvíce desky několika tvarových a metrických formátů. Soubor keramických desek …

Interdisciplinary Research at the Department of Archaeology, Philosophical Faculty, University of Hradec Králové
The Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Krlov (FF UHK) has recently become copublisher of the IANSA journal. This represents an appropriate opportunity to look into the history of the interdisciplinary research at the Department of Archaeology of FF UHK. This article gives an overview of the research undertaken, mainly in the field of experimental archaeology and the study of ancient technologies. The overview demonstrates the natur…
How Was Neolithic Pottery Fired? An Exploration of the Effects of Firing Dynamics on Ceramic Products
Beyond the technological chain
Formal and technological attributes of pottery mirror potters’ habitus, actions, and decisions inhibited or stimulated by users of pottery. The variability of these attributes in time and space reflects networks of producers embedded in a complex social network. But how the knowledge of pottery manufacturing processes can be used to gain more accurate understanding of the society behind the “chaînes opératoires” when the basis for the interpretat…
Potter’s Wheel in the Iron Age in Central Europe
Quantification of the orientation and alignment of aplastic components of a ceramic body as a method for distinguishing among various means of using a rotational device in pottery forming
Identification of Pottery‐Forming Techniques using Quantitative Analysis of the Orientation of Inclusions and Voids in Thin Sections
The relationship between forming techniques and orientation of the components of ceramic materials in the context of pottery technology has long been recognized and used for identification of the techniques employed to create archaeological ceramics. The alignment of inclusions is usually characterized by qualitative categories or ordinal scales. This paper evaluates the potential of quantitative orientation analysis for identification of pottery…
Identification of Pottery Firing Structures Using the Thermal Characteristics of Firing
Firing is a key step in the operational sequence of pottery technology and firing procedures affect many pottery characteristics. It is not clear whether these characteristics can be attributed to specific types of pottery structures. Analysis of 72 experimental pottery firings with a wide range of firing structures has shown that a significant difference exists between one‐space and two‐space firings, at the very least. The main criterion for de…
