Vision and Reality
In this article I explore the origins of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. I focus on the complex relationship between Paul Fejos, the foundation's first scientific director, and Axel Wenner-Gren, its founding president and benefactor. The accusation of having been a Nazi collaborator remains an undeserved stain on Wenner-Gren's name. Recently declassified documents concerning Wenner-Gren's controversial 1942 inclusion on t…
Party and State in Cuba
This article examines the Cuban record concerning gender equality in political decision making. I begin with a brief overview of Cuba's system of government. I then examine the gender composition of the country's legislative structures, discuss efforts to strengthen women's political participation, and compare the inclusion of women into key state and party decision-making bodies. Gender Equality in the Salvadoran Transition
The construction of a true democracy entails the full realization of women['s rights] and their creative participation in all spheres of national life. This is a fundamental principle in the societal project for which the FMLN is fighting. We have a commitment: to win equal rights for women, [and] to overcome their marginalization and oppression in Salvadoran society.

National Unity and Popular Hegemony
On 11 January 1986, the Sandinista government announced the modification of the 1981 Agrarian Reform Law. The new law institutionalizes significant changes in Sandinista agrarian policy which have yet to be analyzed. The changes introduced suggest that the Nicaraguan agrarian reform was reaching its limits during 1985, after successfully distributing 2,523,388 manzanas of land to 83,322 families. Further, six years into the institutionalization o…
Popular Democracy in the New Nicaragua
The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical analysis of the Nicaraguan model of popular democracy by examining the role of mass organizations in fostering popular democracy in the Nicaraguan transition to socialism. Since 1979, the Sandinista experiment has attempted to combine representative and participatory forms of democracy into a model which will guarantee political democracy and at the same time ensure popular hegemony in order to f…
