    Traditional gatherings of men in certain stables in the Hungarian village of Atány are described and the nature of their memberships and their social functions, particularly in the political sphere, are explored. These gatherings are the chief setting for the formation and expression of patron-client relations in the village, and historical as well as modern aspects of the patronage system are discussed
