    Open Access•Einat Davidi•ARTICLE•Amerika•2023•References: 18

    Einat Davidi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Hispanic Studies•2022

  • Buber's Elijah as an Allegorical Play

    Einat Davidi•ARTICLE•Partial Answers Journal of…•2021

The play Elijah (1963), written by the philosopher Martin Buber in his twilight days, represents his diagnosis of the state of humanity at his time. I discuss this play as an allegorical drama, examining it against the background of Buber's rejection of allegory, and demonstrating its implementation of the specific sense Buber gave to the allegoric in "Symbolic and Sacramental Existence in Judaism" (1934). Dramatic, allegorical multilayered agon …

  • Preciosa, Run Preciosa!’

    Einat Davidi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2020

In this essay I examine a case of intertextuality in which Lorca refers to Cervantes. In Cervantes’ novella La gitanilla (1613) Lorca identified two themes with which he engaged creatively in his early work, the feminine and the figure of the Gypsy; themes that in Cervantes are moulded into a single character—Preciosa, to become the quintessential Gypsy of Spanish literature. In the romance Preciosa y el aire from Romancero Gitano (1928) Lorca to…

  • The Corpus of Hebrew and Jewish Autos Sacramentales

Einat Davidi•ARTICLE•European Journal of Jewish Studies•2019

This article identifies a set of plays written in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by ‘new Jews’ in the Western Sephardi Diaspora, as autos sacramentales . It discusses essential characteristics of this genre, such as the dual—theomachic and psychomachic—level, the triangle constellation of allegorical characters with human nature in its center and the representatives of good and evil on both sides, and the parallelism created in the play…
