Apie santuokos apeigų „valstybinimą“ sovietų Lietuvoje
On the ‘Statising’ of Marriage Rites in Soviet Lithuania The article explores marriage rituals in Soviet Lithuania using ethnographic and historical materials. These socially significant life-cycle rites were strategically mobilised by the authoritarian state for ideological propaganda, and for the consolidation of its power and legitimacy. In an effort to make its dominance more pervasive, the Party purposely ‘statised’ marriage rituals, by rend…
Verdery, Katherine. My Life as a Spy: Investigations in a Secret Police File
Drama Underground. Forgetting Socialist Nostalgia
Others, the Nation, and its (Dis)integration in ‘European’ Lithuania
As in other member states of the European Union, in post-socialist Lithuania lofty ideals of pan-continental ‘integration’ are countered by local understandings of what constitutes belonging and togetherness. Rather than unquestioningly embracing the idea of the European supranation, many Lithuanians reassert their national selves and adopt an increasingly critical stance towards grand projects intended to create continental oneness. What politic…
Conversion after socialism: Disruptions, modernisms and technologies of faith in the former Soviet Union
The large and sudden influx of missionaries into the former Soviet Union after seventy years of militant secularism has been controversial, and the widespread occurrence of conversion has led to anxiety about social and national disintegration. Although these concerns have been vigorously discussed in national arenas, social scientists have remained remarkably silent about the subject. This volume’s focus on conversion offers a novel approach to …
On the charisma, civility, and practical goodness of "modern" Christianity in post-Soviet Lithuania
This article examines The Word of Faith, one of the largest congregations of "modern" charismatic Christians in post-Soviet Lithuania. The ethnographic focus is on the church's extensive network of trust, altruistic exchange, and sociability, known as bendravimas. These networks are theorized as a kind of civil society that allows its members to claim "ethical distinction" and enables them to take a critical stance toward the surrounding social m…
Sensuous (Re)Collections: The Sight and Taste of Socialism at Grūtas Statue Park, Lithuania
The present paper is about Grūtas, a Lithuanian park—museum featuring recuperated Soviet-era artifacts. This museum is examined as a locus of public memory where the nation's socialist history is invoked through visual representations (recovered statuary) and by implicating the sense of taste ("Soviet" drinks and dishes served at the museum's café). The paper suggests that seeing the Socialist past at Grūtas activates memories of trauma and loss,…

On 'Modern' Christians, Consumption, and the Value of National Identity in Post-Soviet Lithuania
Following the demise of the Soviet Union, Lithuania has opened up to global systems not only as a competitive consumer market but also as a new sphere of influence for various neo-Protestant charismatic churches. As signifiers of 'modernity,' transnational commodities and religious faiths are especially appealing to younger generations of Lithuanians who use them to redefine the meanings of their selfhood at the present moment of the disorienting…
