  • Guttman Scaling with Word Processors

    Open Access•Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•1990•References: 3

WordPerfect 5.0, WordStar 4.0, or similar word-processing systems, can serve to revitalize Guttman scaling—a methodological approach to item analysis—both as a research tool and, perhaps more importantly, as a teaching aid. Described here is a fast, easily understood, hands-on techmque which emphasizes the visual properties of scales and their construction. Since it permits the researcher to take an effective role in scale construction, scaling w…

  • Simmel's Forms of Experiencing: The Adventure as Symbolic Work

    Open Access•Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 8

Simmel says the content of experience does not make the adventure, the form does! To help clarify this remark, the Simmelian adventurer here is recast, following leads from Mead, Burke, and the pragmatists, as an ephemeral role incumbent engaged in symbolic work. The adventure is presented in terms of symbolic conversions of the content of life's experiences-physical things, social things, events, and persons-into objects of adventure. The form o…

  • Black magic beliefs and white magic practices: The common structure of intimacy, tradition, and power

    Open Access•Jules J Wanderer, George Rivera et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 7

In this article, black magic beliefs and white magic practices among a group of Mexican-American women are shown to share common multidimensional organizing principles, uncovered in a smallest space analysis to be: intimacy, tradition, and power. A subsequent analysis of intimacy permits a reexamination of the role-location of the curandera in the healing hierarchy

  • Scaling Delinquent Careers Over Time

    Open Access•Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•Criminology•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Guttman scales, especially those produced from data collected over time, and the properties of Guttman scales–unidimensionality and cumulativeness–have been underutilized in the description and analysis of certain constructs in sociology that are dynamic, and of certain processes that are reversible. The Guttman scale reported here was produced from delinquency self report data gathered on 581 students at two different points in time. Two purpose…

  • In Defense of Popular Taste: Film Ratings Among Professionals and Lay Audiences

    Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1970•Cited by: 4

Portions of the myths surrounding popular taste are based upon the conjectures and condemnations of professional critics of popular culture. Different pictures of the professional citic have been painted: some characterize the critic as a snob; others, along with Gans, are more likely to characterize the critic as a typocal upper-middle-class American belonging to the upper-middle taste public. This paper reports a secondary analysis of a direct …

  • An Index of Riot Severity and Some Correlates

    Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1969•Cited by: 12

While certain variables do not correlate with the presence or absence of riots in American cities, they do correlate with riot severity. Such variables are more influential in determining the severity of a riot, once it has begun, that they are in determining the outbreak of that riot. The Index-a Guttman-type scale developed from materials describing disorders in 1967-suggest that the events that constitute riots and civil-criminal disorders are…

  • An Empirical Study in the Sociology of Knowledge

    Open Access•Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1969•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Investigations in the sociology of knowledge usually take as their point of departure some substantive property of a mode of thought. They then seek to delineate and understand the social origins of that mode of thought. This paper suggests the possibility of supplementing the substantive approach with structural materials. Portions of two different intellectual systems are treated empirically to ascertain the manner in which their demonstrations…

  • Riots: A Test of the Congruity of Events

    Jules J Wanderer•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1968•Cited by: 10•References: 4

The stereotypical conception of crowd behavior as bizarre and incongruous is empirically examined through the development and analysis of a Guttman scale of riot severity for 75 civil-criminal disorders. It is found that certain aspects of civil-criminal disorders fail to support some of the assumptions about collective behavior made in the spirit of the LeBon tradition
