From quantity to quality? A conventionalist re-reading of Argentina's wine industry reconversion process
Power and its sources in the governance of global value chains
This paper tackles the broader question of why inequality along global value chains (GVCs) tends to remain unchallenged despite the successful upgrading and insertion of firms operating in the world-system's periphery. Because the reduction and reproduction of inequalities are both intimately connected to power relations along GVCs, such relations are at the core of my analysis. Conceptually, my theorization of power builds on recent work by Dall…

Requalifying markets of basic food commodities? An examination of the Round Table on Responsible Soy's implementation in Córdoba, Argentina
The Round Table on Responsible Soy's Landnahme
The Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS) is a multi-stakeholder organization that has set as its aim to improve the environmental, social and economic conditions of soy production. To do so, it relies on a certification scheme whose standards seek to regulate the practices of producers. Unlike most certifications, however, RTRS allows for the detachment of ‘sustainability’ from physical commodities. In this way, the former is converted into ‘RTR…
Reclaiming critique in social sciences – or why ‘non-normative critique’ constitutes a contradiction in terms
The growing popularity that postmodern positions have achieved in the social sciences since the 1970s has brought with it a transformation in the way in which critique is understood and exercised. This has resulted in a ‘weak’ form of critique that, seeking to avoid authoritarian or arbitrary impositions, rejects the evaluative and normative aspirations that had traditionally characterized critical social sciences. In this paper, one of its most …
Class dynamics and ideological construction in the struggle over fairness
This paper develops a neo-Gramscian conceptual framework in order to examine the ideological constructs and political dynamics that frame the day-to-day workings of the certification-based Fairtrade initiative. To accomplish this goal, the paper resorts to the notion of a 'comprehensive concept of control', which accounts for the main ideological elements that constitute the Fairtrade vision of the world. The analysis of these imaginaries is comp…
Transforming or Reproducing Conventional Socioeconomic Relations? Introducing a Regulationist Framework for the Assessment of Fairtrade
Putting Culture in its Place? A Critical Engagement with Cultural Political Economy
Ngai-Ling Sum and Bob Jessop present Cultural Political Economy (CPE) as a project that seeks to deepen Critical Political Economy (C*PE) through an engagement with the cultural turn. This article critically assesses their success in such an enterprise. It begins by framing CPE within Jessop and Sum’s previous work on the Regulation Approach, in order to show why the former can only be understood as the result of a critical dialogue with the latt…
