This paper describes findings from a 1994 experimental evaluation of alternative work-search requirements in the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program. Requiring additional employer contacts or verification of contacts reduced UI receipt by one week and $115 per claimant. Because these additional requirements did not entail additional re-employment services, the UI spell reduction can be attributed to increased non-monetary costs for remaining on U…

Employing a sample of 1975 CETA enrollees and comparison groups drawn from the March 1978 CPS using a nearest-neighbor matching technique, the authors estimate statistically significant negative effects on men's earnings and statistically significant positive effects on women's earnings. These results stem…

Open Access•Terry R Johnson, John Pencavel et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1982•Cited by: 5

This paper outlines a scheme that forecasts the change in net earnings or in hours worked that results from the introduction of a negative income tax (NIT) program. These functions are then used to simulate the effects of several NIT programs. The findings s…

  • The Determinants of Planned Retirement Age

Arden Hall, Terry R Johnson•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1980•Cited by: 5

This paper develops and estimates a model of planned retirement age that views the retirement decision as depending partially on individual tastes and opportunities--reflected in retirement plans--and partially on unforeseeable events such as the onset of health problems or the unexpected loss of a job. Empirical results for both elderly men and women, based on the 1969 wave of the Longitudinal Retirement History Study, are consistent with the mo…
